IT’S ALL ABOUT ME….

BY SITTI SAHRIANA
MEETING PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST TIME
Greetings are used to say hello in English. It’s common to use different greetings depending on
whether you greet a friend, family or a business associate. When you meet friends, you may
use informal greetings. Formal greetings are also used with people you do not know very well.

When introducing yourself to someone for the first time, especially in a formal situation, you
may use the greetings below.

Formal:
Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
(it’s) (very) nice/glad/happy to meet you.
Nice/Glad/Happy to meet you.
How do you do?
Example:
a. John : Ken. Meet Steve
Ken : Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
Steve : How do you do Ken.
Ken : How do you do.

b. Tom : Sarah, I would like you to meet John.

Sarah : Hello, pleased to meet you. How do you do?
John : Pleased to meet you too. How do you do?
Note: The reply to “How do you do” is “How do you do”. This is appropriate when you meet

someone for the first time.

The question ‘How do you do’ is only a formality. In other words, the question does not need

to be answered. Rather, it is a standard phrase used when meeting someone for the first time.

Tom : Peter, I’d like to introduce you to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith this is Peter Thompson.

Peter : How do you do?

Mr. Smith : How do you do?

Informal:
Hi.
Hey (man/dude/guys)
How’s it going?
How’s everything/life?
How are you?
How are things?
What’s up/new?
What’s going on?
How have you been?

Joko : Life is good. Thank you.
Note: It’s important to note the question How are you? Or What’s up? doesn’t necessarily
need a response. If you do response, these phrases are generally expected:
