TIME, SPEED AND DISTANCE-I
CONCEPT
Distance = Speed × Time
Average speed = [Total Distance/Total time]
1 km/hr. = 5/18 m/s
1 m/s = 18/5 km/hr.
If a body moves at V1 for a distance and at V2 for same distance, then
2V1V2
Average speed =V V
1 2
If the distance covered by two bodies is same then
d = V1t1 = V2t2 d1 V1
If time of travel for two bodies is same, thend V
2 2
MEETING POINT and MEETING TIME
Case – 1: Two bodies are moving in the same direction
Distance of meeting Difference in start time
Product of speeds Difference in speed
Ex: A train travelling 50 km/hr. leaves Dhanbad at 10 am and another train
travelling 70 km/hr. starts at 2 pm in the same direction. How many km from
Dhanbad will they be together?
Sol:
d 4
50 70 20
d = 700 km
MEETING POINT and MEETING TIME
Case – 2: Let two bodies start from A and B at the same instant with speeds V1
and V2 respectively moving in opposite direction. If the bodies meet at point P,
such that AP = x then BP = d – x
x dx d
= Meeting time (t) = V V
V1 V2 1 2
Both start at a time difference (∆t)
Here both the bodies start at different time in opposite direction and move
towards each other and if they meet at a distance x from one end then
x dx
= time difference
V1 V2
Ex: The distance between two stations Dhanbad and Varanasi is 550 km. A
train starts at 2 pm from Dhanbad and moves towards Varanasi at average
speed of 50 km/hr. Another train starts 3 pm Varanasi at average speed of 70
km/hr. How from Dhanbad will they meet?
Sol:
Using formula given previously,
x 550 x
1
50 70
x = 200 km
MEETING POINT and MEETING TIME
Case – 3: Starting at some time and in same questions and meeting and return
journey,
Let two bodies A and B start from P and Q at speeds VA and VB or with
their ratio of speeds VA : VB such that B reaches Q, returns immediately and meets
A at R. Time of travel of A = Time travel of B.
VA
Distance travelled by A = 2 d VA VB x PR
VB
2d d d x PQ PR
Distance travelled by B = VA VB
Total distance travelled by A + B = PQ + QR + PR
= x + [d + (d – x)] = 2d
MEETING POINT and MEETING TIME
Case – 4: Two bodies starting at same time in opposite direction and after
passing each other complete the journey.
Let the two bodies A and B start at same time with speeds V A and VB
respectively in the opposite directions. These two bodies A and B meet at P and
then they continue to move to complete the journey in a and b hours respectively.
Then,
VA b
VB a
Distance Covered is Different
Let the moving body at speed V1 covers a distance d1 in time t1 and at speed v2
covers a distance d2 in time t2 then

Stoppage Time Per Hour For a Train
For the same distance of travel, if a train runs at average speed V 1 km/hr., without
stopping and at average speed V2 km/hr., with stoppage then
Difference in speed
Stoppage time per hour = hour
Faster speed

Time and Distance between Two Moving
Bodies
Let there be two persons A and B.
Speed of A = V1 km/hr.
Speed of B = V2 km/hr.
* If they walk in same direction,
A and B will be (V1 – V2) km apartx in 1 hour.
A and B will be x km apart in V1 – V2 hour.
* If they walk in opposite directions,
A and B will be (V1 + V2) km apartx in 1 hour.
A and B will be x km apart in V1 + V2 hour.
Ex: Two men, P and Q, start walking from an hotel at 2 km and 2.5 km an hour
respectively. By how many km will they be apart at the end of 3.5 hours, if
(i) They walk in opposite directions.
(ii) They walk in the same directions.
Sol:
(i) Required Distance = 3.5 × (2 + 2.5)
= 3.5 × 4.5 = 15.75 km
(ii) Required Distance = 3.5 × (2.5 – 2) =
3.5 × 0.5 = 1.75 km
Ex: An aeroplane covers a certain distance at the speed of 240 km/hr. in 5 hours.
What will be its speed to cover the same distance in 1(2/3) hours?
Sol:
Total distance = 240 × 5 = 1200 km
Speed =1200/(5/3) = 720 km/h
Ex: A man reduces his speed from 20 km/h to 18 km/h. So, he takes 10 minutes
more than the normal time. What is the distance travelled by him?
Sol:
Let real time is t hours, then
Using formula - S1 × t1= S2 × t2
20 × t1 = 18 × (t1 + 10/60)
t1 = 1.5 hours
Hence distance = 20 × 1.5 =30 km
Ex: If Rahul had walked 20 km/h faster he would have saved 1 hour in the
distance of 600 km. What is the usual speed of Rahul?
Sol:
S1 × S2 = Distance × 20 = 600 × 20 = 12000
Hence factorise in such a manner that the
difference between both speed is 20 we get,
S1 =100 km/h, S2= 120 km/h
Speed of Rahul = 100 km/h
Ex: Ram travels 60 km at the speed 30 km/h and next 30 km at 15 km/h and 180
km at the speed of 90 km/h. Find his average speed?
Sol:
Total Distance
Average speed =
Total time
60 30 180
= = 45 km/h
222
Ex: A car travels 1/3 of the distance on a straight road with a velocity of 20 km/h,
1/4 of the rest with a velocity of 25 km/h and the last velocity of 30 km/h. What is
the average velocity of the car for the whole journey?
Sol: 1
Average speed = 1 1 1 = 25 km/hr
60 150 60
Ex: A man travel from Kanpur to Lucknow at 90 km/hr. and from Lucknow to
Varanasi at 75 km/hr. The distance between Kanpur and Varanasi is 522 km. If his
average speed is 87 km/hr. Find the distance between Kanpur and Lucknow (in
km)?
Sol: 87 75 4
Time Ratio = 90 87 1 522
Total time taken = 5 = 87 = 6 hours
6
Distance between Kanpur to Lucknow = 90 4 432

Ex: The ratio of speeds of A is to B is 2 : 3 and therefore A takes 20 minutes less
time than B takes. What is the ratio of time taken by A and B?
Sol:
Let speed of A and B is 2x and 3x respectively,
So time taken by A and B is 3x and 2x respectively.
Hence, 3x – 2x = 20 => x = 20
Ratio between time taken by A and B = A : B
= 60 : 40 = 3 : 2
Ex: Walking at ¾ of her normal speed Manya takes 2 hours more than normal
time. What is the normal time?
Sol:
Let initial speed and time of Manya is S1 and t1
respectively
and after Speed and time of Manya is S2 and t2
respectively.
From the question, S2 =3/4 S1 and t2 = t1+2
And S1 × t1= S2 × t2
On solving t1 = 3/4 (t1 + 2)
t1 = 6 hours
Ex: A is twice fast as B and B is thrice as fast as C. The journey covered by C in
78 minutes then time taken by A to cover the same journey is-
Sol:
Ratio of speeds between A, B and C is 6 : 3 : 1
So the ratio between time taken by them is = 1 : 3 : 6
Time taken by C is 78 min.
Hence, time taken by A is = 1/6 × 78 = 13 min
