The Demographic Transition Model
The demographic transition model shows us how population changes
over time in a particular country.
It can represent a range of countries at any one time, or a country
progressing through time.
Demographic means population.
Transition means change
The blue line is the Birth Rate
What happens to the Birth rate over time ?
The black line is the Death Rate
What happens to the Death rate over time?
The red line is the total population.
What happens to the total population over time ?
The green section is natural increase
What happens to natural increase over time?
Task 1. Understanding the DTM
In your groups draw a large diagram of the Demographic Transition Model. Annotate
it to show what is happening at each stage.
You need to include:
1. A description of what is happening to birth rates, deaths rates and natural
increase.
2. An explanation of why birth rates and death rates might be changing.
3. Examples of countries at each stage.
4. Using your population pyramids from Lesson 3, try to sketch a pyramid with
each stage on the model.
