What is Probability?
BACK
Give me an example of event where
probability is being used.
BACK
When we get a probability of 1,
what does it mean?

ACTIVITY
1. Did you take a National Career
Assessment Examination (NCAE) when
you were in Grade 9? If so, what is score?
Did you know your rank?
ACTIVITY
2. Have thought of comparing your
academic performance with that of your
classmate?
ACTIVITY
3. Have you wondered what scores you
need for each area to qualify for honors?
ACTIVITY
4. Whenever your teacher asks you to
form a line according to your height, what
is your position in relation to your
classmates?
ACTIVITY
5. Have you asked yourself why a certain
examinee in any national examination gets a
higher rank than other examinees? Some state
colleges and universities are offering
scholarships for graduating students who
belong to the upper 5%, 10%, or even 25%.
What does this mean to you?

PERCENTILE
At the end of the lesson the learners will be able to:
illustrates the following measures of
position:
quartiles;
deciles and;
percentiles.
WHAT’S THE MEANING OF
THIS?
Measures of position My definition
Quartile
Decile
Percentile
MEASURES OF POSITION
-give us a way to see where a certain data point or
value falls in a sample or distribution. A measure can
tell us whether a value is about the average, or
whether it's unusually high or low.
QUARTILE
Are the score points which divide a distribution into
four equal parts.
Q1 is called the lower quartile
Q2 is nothing but the median/middle quartile
Q3 is the upper quartile
1.To CALCULATE THE POSITION OF Q1 =
THE LOWER QUARTILE
where, Q1 =First Quartile
Lower Quartile (L) = Position of
k = ordinal rank of a given value
Q1 = and
If L falls halfway between two n = number of values in a data set
(sorted from smallest to largest)
integers, round up. The Lth elements
is the lower quartile value. Q1.
1. To CALCULATE THE POSITION
OF THE LOWER QUARTILE Q3 =
Upper Quartile (U) = Position of
where, Q3 = third Quartile
Q3 =
k = ordinal rank of a given value and
If L falls halfway between two
n = number of values in a data set
(sorted from smallest to largest)
integers, round down. The Uth elements
is the lower quartile value. Q1.
EXAMPLE
{1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31}
To find Q1, locate its position using the formula
Q1 = Q1 =
Q1 =2.5 ≈ 3
Q1 = Q1 =
EXAMPLE
{1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31,}
To find Q1, locate its position using the formula
Q1 = Q1 =
Q1 = Q1 = Q1 =2.5 ≈ 3rd
EXAMPLE
{1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31,}
To find Q3, locate its position using the formula
Q3 = Q3 =
Q3 = Q3 =
Q3 = 7.5 ≈7th
DECILE
Are the nine score points which divide a distribution
into 10 equal parts.
Dk =
TO CALCULATE THE
POSITION OF DECILES where, Q =Quartile
USE THE FORMULA k = ordinal rank of a given value and
n = number of values in a data set
(sorted from smallest to largest)
Dk =
EXAMPLE
Find the 7 decile (D7), given the scores of 11
th
students in their mathematics activity.
1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30,
31, 3, 4, 21
STEPS IN SOLVING THE
DECILE
1. Arrange the score data set in ascending order.
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31, 31
2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Dk = D7 =
D7 = D7 = D7= 8.4≈ 8
STEPS IN SOLVING THE DECILE
1. Arrange the score data set in ascending order.
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31, 31
2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Dk = D5 =
D7 = D5 = D7= 8.4≈ 8
PERCENTILE
- are values that divides the set of data into 100 equal
parts. These values are denoted by P 1, P2, P3,……,
P99. For example, the value of P50 (the median) means
50% of the data have lower than P50.
FORMULA
Pk =
where, P =Percentile
k = ordinal rank of a given value and
n = number of values in a data set
(sorted from smallest to largest)
EXAMPLE
Find the 58th percentile (P58), given the scores of 10 students in
their mathematics activity.
1, 27, 16, 31, 7, 7, 30, 3, 4, 21,
STEPS IN SOLVING THE PERCENTILE
1. Arrange the score data set in ascending order.
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 31, 30,
2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Pk = P58 =
P58 = P58 = P58= 6.38 ≈ 6
STEPS IN SOLVING THE PERCENTILE
1. Arrange the score data set in ascending order.
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 31, 30,
2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Pk = P58 =
P58 = P58 = P58= 6.38 ≈ 6
