Formulas to calculate
a specified measure of
position:
Example 1:
Consider the scores of 13 students in
a 15-item quiz
as follows: 5, 7, 4, 13, 3, 12, 14, 15, 12,
10, 8, 9, 8. Find for Q1.
Solution:
In order to get the quartile positions, the scores
must be arranged
in chronologically, preferably increasing order.
That is, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 12, 12, 13, 14, 15.

𝑄1 = ; where n = 13

𝑄1 = = = 3.5 or 4 (round up)

𝑸𝟏 is the 4th observation. In the set of given data, the 4th is 7.
Hence, Q1 = 7
EXAMPLE 1
Consider the scores of 13 students in a 15-item quiz
as follows: 5, 7, 4, 13, 3, 12, 14, 15, 12, 10, 8, 9, 8. Find for Q1.

Solution:
In order to get the quartile positions, the scores must be arranged
in chronologically, preferably increasing order. That is, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8,
8, 9, 10, 12, 12, 13, 14, 15.

𝑄1 = ; where n = 13

𝑄1 = = = 3.5 or 4 (round up)

𝑸𝟏 is the 4th observation. In the set of given data, the 4th is 7. Hence, Q 1 = 7

Example 2
Consider the scores of 30 students in a 25-
item quiz in Mathematics listed below.
Scores: 12, 14, 22, 10, 13, 17, 24, 11, 15, 8 5, 9, 12,
6, 16, 21, 25, 21, 17, 19 10, 7, 11, 23, 19, 22, 20, 25,
5, 11. Find D6.
EXAMPLE 2
Consider the scores of 30 students in a 25-item quiz
in Mathematics listed below. Scores: 12, 14, 22, 10, 13, 17, 24,
11, 15, 8 5, 9, 12, 6, 16, 21, 25, 21, 17, 19 10, 7, 11, 23, 19, 22,
20, 25, 5, 11. Find D6.

Solution:
Arranging them in order, we can locate the measure of position
for deciles using the formula 𝐷𝑘 = , where Dk is decile
position k = 1, 2, …9 , n = number of data.

Scores arranged in order: 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12,

12, 13, 14 15, 16, 17, 17, 19, 19, 20, 21, 21, 22, 22, 23, 24, 25, 25
𝐷𝑘 = ; k=6, n = 30
𝐷6 = = = = 18.6 or 19th
𝑫𝟔 is the 19th observation. In the set of given data, the 19th is 17. Hence, D 6 = 17.

11 12 12 13 14
15 16 17 17 19

Example 3:
Consider the following is a list of
scores resulting from a Math test
administered to 25 students. The
following are scores 24 14 17 12 16 22
7 19 29 30 11 23 16 21 19 8 29 13 27 7
13 15 24 18 15.
Solution:
Arranging them in order, we can locate the
measure of position
for percentiles using the formula 𝑃𝑘 = , where Pk is
percentile position k = 1, 2, …99
n = number of data. Find P25.

𝑃𝑘 =
𝑃25 = = = = 6.5 or 7

𝑷𝟐𝟓 is in the 7th position. In the given data, the 7th
is 13. Hence,
P25 = 13.

27 7 13 15 24 18 15

Solution:
Arranging them in order, we can locate the measure of position for percentiles using the
