III. PROCEDURES
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
 GREETINGS/CLASS ARRANGEMENTS
- Good morning class. -Good morning Ma’am Angoluan
- Before you take your seats, kindly pick up those - Yes Ma’am
pieces of papers you can see inside the classroom
and put it in the trash bin. - Thank you Ma’am
-You may now take your seats.

 REVIEW/PRESENTING THE NEW LESSON

- Okay class! Our lesson for today is all about Solving
Quadratic Equations by Factoring. In your previous
grade you already encountered basic techniques for
-Okay Ma’am. So the factoring techniques
factoring.
that I remember are the Greatest Common
- Can you remember what are those techniques? Factor or the GCF and the Grouping
- Okay Claricia can you share if still remember. method Ma’am.

- The Difference in Two Squares and the

- Very well said. Trinomial method Ma’am.

- What else? Yes, Sherwin.

- Alright. Very good.

- (Students listen attentively)
So class, in factoring polynomial, we are usually
intended in breaking it down into polynomials that
have integer coefficients and constants. And those
factoring techniques that are mentioned earlier by
your classmates are helpful in solving quadratic
equations by factoring.

 MOTIVATION
So before we proceed to our new lesson this morning,
let’s play a short game first. It is called YES-NO-
STAND UP game.

- The mechanics of this game is, I’ll give you some

questions that are answerable by YES or NO. If your - Yes Ma’am.
answer is YES, you’ll going to stand up and
answering No, means sit down.

- Do you understand class?

- So let’s begin.

(The teacher ask random questions to test the

knowledge of the students) (Students Perform: Some of them stands
up and some of them also answers NO,
QUESTIONS: means they remain sitting down in every
1. Do you love math? question.)
2. Do you love factorials?
3. Does quadratic equations is the same with
quadratic expressions?
4. Is there any difference between linear equation
and quadratic equations?
5. 2xsquared - 8x, Is this an example of quadratic - Thank you Ma’am.
equation?
- Yes Ma’am
(after the game…..)

- Thank you for your participation class. You may now

take your seats.

- Did you enjoy the game?

B. LESSON PROPER
- Again our lesson for today is all about Solving
Quadratic Equation by Factoring. So, so far you have
learned in your previous lessons how to solve linear - (Students listen attentively)
equations, which include constant terms—plain
numbers—and terms with the variable raised to the
first power.
- So now class, what do you called an equation - Quadratic Equation Ma’am.
containing a second degree polynomial?
- Very good Rogelyn.
- A quadratic equation Ma’am is written in
- And what is the standard form of a quadratic standard form,
equation?
where a, b, and c are real numbers.

- Very well said, Nikki. (students listen attentively)

- Okay class, so this morning we’re going to learn how

to solve quadratic equation. And we know that there
are different ways to solve quadratic equation, but for
the time being, we shall deal only with quadratic
equations that can be factored (factorised). And
applying those factoring techniques that are
mentioned by your classmates earlier where - The Principle of Zero Products states
necessary, and by using the Principle of Zero Ma’am that if two numbers a and b have a
Products. product of 0, then one or both of them is
- By the way class, who among you know the equal to 0.
Principle of Zero Products? Yes Claricia.

- Alright very good Claricia.

- So class, the Principle of Zero Products has big - (Students listen attentively)
implications for solving quadratic equations. If you
have a factored polynomial that is equal to 0, you
know that at least one of the factors or both factors
equal 0.
- So, to apply this rule in solving quadratic
equation by factoring, we must follow the following
steps.

STEPS IN SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION

BY FACTORING
1. Write the quadratic equation in standard form,
2. Factor the quadratic expression.
3. Use the Zero Product Property.
4. Solve the linear equations.
5. Check.

- So let’s have some examples.

Example: How to Solve a Quadratic Equation by
Factoring

- So let’s have some examples.

Example 1: How to Solve a Quadratic Equation by
Factoring
Solve:

SOLUTION:
Step 1: Write the quadratic equation in standard form

Step 2: Factor the quadratic expression

Step 3: Use the Zero Product Property

Step 4: Solve the Linear Equation

- Yes Ma’am.

Step 5: Check
The equation is not in the standard form
Ma’am.

- Did you understand class?

- Okay let’s try another example.

Example 2:
- Class, what have you noticed from the given - We’re going to factor the left side of the
equation? equation Ma’am. We can express it as the
product of two polynomial factors Ma’am.
- Alright, very good observation Sherwin.
- (2y+5) (y-9), Ma’am.
- So, we’re going to write that equation into standard
form, we have,

- What are we going to do next?

- Then we’re going to Use the Zero Product

- Very well said, Sheila. So, it gives us? Property to set each factor to 0, Ma’am.

Alright, so we have,

(2y+5) (y-9) = 0

- Then after that?

- Okay, very good. Now we have,

- You transposed the positive 5 to the right
side of the equation Ma’am, then, you
- Now, we can solve each equation, we have divide it by 2, to get the value of y.

- Yes Ma’am.
- What have you noticed? Anybody who can explain
that solution?

- Very Good observation Sophia. So now, the same

thing in the equation
y – 9 = 0. We have,

- Did you get it class?

- Therefore, these two values are the solution to the
original quadratic equation. So my answer is:

- But I'm not done, though, because the original

exercise told us to "check", which means that we
need to plug our answers back into the original
equation, and make sure it comes out right. - Yes Ma’am.

- So, let’s check if our answer is correct.

- (students raising their hands)

- (they go to the board and solved the given

equations)
- Is it clear now? - Nikki: 1.) -
C. APPLICATION
- From this time class, I want you to solve here in the
board. I want two volunteers.

- Yes Nikki and Rogelyn!

Solve each quadratic equation by factoring.
- The final final solutions are x = 0 and
Solve the equation by Factoring x = 3.
1. Given: - Rogelyn: 2.) -

- The final final solutions are x = -5 and

x = 2.
2. Given:
- Yes, Ma’am.
- Yes, Ma’am.

- (students doing the goodjon clap)

- None so far Ma’am.

- Are they correct class?

- Did you check their answers?
- Alright. Very good. Thank you Nikki and Rogelyn .
- Let’s give a GOODJOB clap to them.
- Is there any questions? Clarifications?
D. GENERALIZATION
- Now, I want you to test if you really understood our
topic.
- Okay, Ma’am, so the Quadratic Equations
- Claricia, How do you solve quadratic equations by
can be solved using the following steps:
factoring? Can you give me the first two steps?
1. Write the quadratic equation in
standard form,
2. Factor the quadratic expression.
- Alright, Very good!
- Then, what are the last three steps, Sherwin? - The last three steps of solving the
quadratic equation by factoring Ma’am, are:
3. Use the Zero Product Property.
4. Solve the linear equations.
- Excellent class! 5. Check

IV. EVALUATION - I think you already understood our topic for today. So, now get 1 whole
sheet of paper and solve the following quadratic equation. This activity is good for 20
minutes only.
