What is Aspergers Syndrome?


Asperger's syndrome is a neurologically based disorder that primarily affects a persons ability to be successful with social relationship . The disorder also affects cognitive, sensory and communication skills

First described by a Viennese doctor, Hans Asperger, in1944, it is still little known and often misunderstood.

Diagnosing Aspergers
when people are aware that something is wrong, it is often confused with autism, obssessive-conpulsive disorder, and even ADHD.

it is currently belived that it occurs more often in boys than in girls

What are some unique characteristics of students with Asperger's Syndrome?

Students have at least average intelligence, and many of them have a special talent or skill. The level of severity varies from:

Students with Asperger`s Syndrome have difficulty

Social interactions

Reading body language

Physical boundaries

Are often teased and bullied

Understand social rules

Relating to other people`s feelings.

Concentrating on a task they are not interested in.

Characteristic's of the students with Asperger's


They usually have excellent vocabularies and understand a wide variety of words in isolation buy may speak with unusual tone rhythm and pitch.
Trouble by repetitive sounds that no one else can hear. They may have extreme preferences for some foods and extreme dislikes of others. They may dislike wearing certain pieces of clothing.

Dealing with behavior Issues


Behavior management should focus on clear expectations and not on emotional appeals these into class rules that are written out on a large piece of paper and put in an obvious place in the classroom

Create rules simple for appropriate behavior

Kids with Asperger`s are often described as

Little professors

They often become focused On a particular interest.

In more extreme cases, they may have ritualistic ways of doing things, like washing their hands or playing.
