learning activity
or assessment
that asks students to demonstrate
their knowledge, understanding, and
proficiency by doing or creating
something.
PERFORMANCE TASK IN
• GRASPS
The GRASPS FORM
framework is a design tool
that helps teachers create authentic
performance tasks that emphasize
context and role playing.
Goal: Define the problem or challenge the
student need to solve.
Role: Define the student’s role in the task.
Audience: Identify the target audience for the
student’s product or performance.
Situation: Create the scenario or context for the
task.
Product/Performance and Purpose: Explain why
the student will create and why.
Standards and Criteria: Provide students with a

GRASPS Performance Task in Science: "Growing
a Healthy Plant”
Task Overview
Topic: Plant Needs and Growth
Grade level: Grade 2
Objective: Students will grow a plant from a
seed, observe its growth, and explain the
factors that help plants thrive.
GRASPS Components
1. G - Goal
• Goal: To grow a healthy plant and
observe its growth over a period of time.
• Objective: Record observations, identify
what plants need to survive, and
present findings on what conditions
helped the plant grow best.
2. R - Role
• Role: Students take on the role of a
plant scientist or botanist.
• Responsibilities: They are responsible
for caring for the plant, recording
observations, and understanding how
factors like sunlight, water, and soil
affect growth.
3. A - Audience
• Audience: Classmates, teacher, and
possibly parents during a presentation.
• Purpose: To explain their plant’s growth
journey and share what they learned
about plant needs.
4. S - Situation
• Situation: Students have been asked to
grow a plant in class to help teach
others about how plants grow.
• Challenge: They need to ensure their
plant gets the right amount of sunlight,
water, and care over several weeks,
then analyze how these factors
influenced growth.
5. P - Product/Performance
• Product: A plant journal and
presentation including:
- Growth Journal: Students will record
daily or weekly observations (e.g., height,
number of leaves, color) and include notes
on how much sunlight and water it
received.
- Presentation: Students will present their
plant’s growth and explain which conditions
they believe were most important in
helping it thrive.
- Conclusion: Students share conclusions
on what plants need to be healthy and
reflect on any challenges they encountered.
6. S - Standards for Success
• Criteria for Assessment (based on a
rubric):
-Observation Detail: Accurate and
thorough observations recorded in the
journal.
-Understanding of Plant Needs: Clear
understanding of sunlight, water, and soil
- Growth Success: Plant shows growth and
appears healthy based on care given.
- Presentation Quality: Presentation is clear
and organized, with student reflections on
the process.

Different examples of
Performance Task
1. Science Experiment (Grade 3-5)
Students perform a simple experiment,
like making a balloon inflate using baking
soda and vinegar and explain how it
works.
Different examples of
Performance Task
2. Create a Habitat Poster (Grade 2-4)
Students pick an animal habitat (like the
ocean or forest), draw the environment,
and label animals and plants that live
there.

Performance Task
3. Math Shopping (Grade 3-5)
Students are given a list of items with
prices. They choose items within a set
budget and add up the total cost.
Different examples of
Performance Task
4. Book Report (Grade 2-5)
After reading a book, students create a
drawing of their favorite scene and tell the
class what the book is about.
Different examples of
Performance Task
5. Timeline of Your Life (Grade 1-3)
Students draw pictures to show
important events in their life, like
birthdays or family trips, in order.
Different examples of
Performance Task
6. Community Helper Dress-Up (Grade K-2)
Students dress up as a community helper
(like a teacher or firefighter) and explain
their job to the class.
Different examples of
Performance Task
7. Weather Journal (Grade 4-5)
Students track the weather for a week
and share what they observed.
Different examples of
Performance Task
8. Map of the School (Grade 3-5)
Students draw a simple map of their
school or classroom and show where
things are located.
Different examples of
Performance Task
9. Plant Growth Journal (Grade 1-3)
Students plant a seed and draw pictures
or write about how it grows each week.
