TYPES OF WASTES AND

SEGREGATION OF WASTES
TYPES OF WASTES
 All waste is not of the same type. Based on the
physical state, waste may be classified as solid
waste, liquid waste and gaseous waste.
 Solid waste consists of materials such as
vegetable waste, paper, cardboard, metals,
broken glass and plastic materials.
 Liquid waste includes domestic sewage, dirty
water from washing utensils and cloths, and
chemicals solvents released from factories.
 Gaseous waste, such as smoke, are emitted by
the burning of fuels in factories and vehicles.
BIODEGRADABLE WASTES
Some material, such as vegetable peels and
dry leaves, decay naturally over a period of
time, whereas some materials such as
metals and plastic do not decay even for
many years. Wastes that can be broken
down or decomposed into simple substances
by the action of microorganisms are called
biodegradable wastes. Biodegradable
wastes include fruit and vegetable peels,
paper, wood, cotton, human and animal
wastes and many other natural materials.
NON-BIODEGRADABLE WASTES

Wastes that cannot be broken down or

decompose by microorganisms are known
as non-biodegredable wastes. Examples are
metals, plastic and glass bottles. Such
wastes do not undergo the natural decaying
process and remain in the enviroment for
hundreds of years. Non-biodegradable
wastes contribute to solid wastes and harm
to our enviroment. Therefore, this kind of
wastes should be recycled and reused as
much as possible.
SEGREGATION OF
WASTES
Waste segregation means sorting different
types of garbage into separate categories,
like "wet waste" (food scraps, plant
material) and "dry waste" (plastic, paper,
glass), to make recycling and proper
disposal easier; it's important because
mixing different waste types can
contaminate the environment and limit
recycling options.
Why segregate?

ANS: To manage waste effectively, allowing

recyclable materials to be reused and
biodegradable waste to be composted
instead of ending up in landfills.
How to segregate:
 Use different colored bins for wet and dry
waste.
 Put wet waste in a green bin and dry
waste in a blue bin.
 Properly dispose of hazardous waste like
batteries separately.
Benefits of waste segregation:

 Reduces pollution
 Conserves natural resources by recycling
 Helps create compost from organic
waste
