sto Grujice, kod Tomazea je Radojica, a umesto Novaka je Tomi Mihovil. Radoji
ca ubija Arapina koji otima devojke iz svatova, ljubi ih nedelju dana, a potom vraa
majci. U svom kratkom komentaru iz prepisa pesme u rukopisu MH 172, Tomazeo
je sasvim ispravno ukazao na starinu motiva i njegovo prenoenje na nove junake:
Smjeana su ovdje stara i nova predanja. Arap je od Markovih vremenah, Radoica
od ajdukih. Posljednji stih (Oj Arape odneli te vrazi!) dodat je od koga sljepca.

Young Hero in South Slavic Oral Poetry

Summary
In South Slavic oral poetry, the image of child-hero is highly formulaic; it
denotes a figure without a family, with a firm ideological footing, possessed of an
ambition to rule and with a clearly proclaimed purpose of epic existence. The typology
of a young hero in South Slavic oral poetry is carried out on the basis of nomenclature,
epic attributes, the position within the family, epic status and sujet functions. On the
basis of these criteria, two basic types of young hero are differentiated. Grujica and
Sekula represent two different genealogical lines within the framework of family
relations (son-father, nephew-uncle), gravitating towards different thematic circles
(poems about outlaws epic poems of older periods) and forms of epic singing,

thus implying two different types of changes undergone by young heroes in epic
poetry (changing clothes metamorphoses). The description of the hero as young or
old represents an integral part of epic formulativity. The typology of a young hero in
South Slavic oral poetry may be conducted on the basis of his age, position within
the family, epic status and sujet functions.

Epic Centenarians Well Respected Elders and

Old Men Exposed to Ridicule

Summary
In the epic habitus of a hero, the focus is on his fights and heroic deeds. Old
age is not a major epic topic. Old men appear sporadically, very rarely as protagonists. They best fit the sujet functions of rulers, victims and linking characters in the
guise of advisers, clergymen, although the most frequent role they appear in is that
of an aged warrior, even though that particular role is not typical for them. The most
memorable characters are those who deviate from the central, zero point towards
mighty heroes or great cowards. This paper deals with the above-mentioned range
of roles, as well as examples of deviation from sujet roles or of making them more
complex. On the level of structure, old men are linked with other characters based
on the principle of contrast (according to their function, age, appearance, activity,
courage, etc.). The characters of eternal oldsters are developed by way of layering
mythological and real historical models. The ambivalent position of epic old men,
well respected as well as degraded, testifies to the existence of an evolutionary line
of development in the process of modelling heroes.

Epic Biographies of Kosovo Heroes

A Contribution to Studying the Verisimilitude of the Poems

Summary
In the research conducted so far, the cult of Kosovo heroes was based mainly
on the study of the Kosovo cycle poems from Vuks collection of Serbian Folk
Poems.
Apart from bugartica-type folk poems, there did exist poems about the Battle
of Kosovo even before Vuks collection, and in the poems recorded after Vuk, there
was an expansion in the form of addition of motifs that were not to be found in the
poems collected by Vuk. Attempts to supplement poems from the Kosovo cycle by
adding elements missing from those poems collected by Vuk were at the expense
of their artistic value.
In the poems collected after Vuk, there was continuity of singing about the
Battle of Kosovo, with a tendency towards broadening the storyline and, to a certain extent, intensifying or diminishing the function of the hero in the actual battle.
These transformations of epic singing about the Battle of Kosovo were undoubtedly
influenced by the political circumstances that influenced the shaping of the cult of
the hero through subsequent interventions.

Summary
In developed poetic biographies, the life of epic heroes often narrows down
to a single sujet model or boils down to a mere change of names in an identical
motif structure. It is difficult to establish with certainty the reasons for this changeability/stability, all the more in view of the fact that transposing poems through time
and space tends to activate older layers of tradition and historical details of general
and/or regional significance. The forgetting of historical facts occurs parallel with
committing persons and events to memory, but there are no rules in these opposing
processes. The dynamics of various flows, the selectivity of tradition (memory) and
the stability of a name in the narrative model are reflected very well in the fate of
Musi Stefan, even though at first glance he is a sideline figure in the Kosovo-related
complex of topics, reduced to several motifs in a not very large circle of variants.

narodima i zemljama, u sklopu nacionalnointegracijskih ideologija,
prelazila put od koncepta folklornoga do koncepta nacionalnoga
glazbala, nerijetko i natrag. Kroz iri drutveni odnos prema takvim
glazbalima trajno se moe oitavati niz praksi glazbenih, drutvenih,
verbalnih kojima je svrha posredovati izmeu razliitih dihotomi
ja: tradicionalno/moderno, ruralno/urbano, balkansko/civilizirano,
puk/gospoda odnosno nii i vii drutveni slojevi. (...) Na toj je crti
meu Hrvatima, Srbima i Crnogorcima nastala predodba slijepoga
guslara kao roenoga pjesnika kojemu su njegovo glazbalo dale same
vile da opjeva slavnu narodnu prolost (ani 1998: 51).

The Coding of the Text of His Social Role

Summary
The paper examines the various forms of introducing the image of the epic
singer into a folklore text (in a broader sense, bearing in mind, first of all, the introductory and closing formulas of epic poems). We examine how such cultural information
is shaped, realised and confirmed in the actual performative act.
The figure of the epic singer, that is, the elements of his social role, were
expressed in traditional culture (judging by the material found in the classic epic
corpus) primarily through those textual elements that are contextually conditioned
(the general introductory and closing formulas, that is, external comments). These
formulas carried the crucial information about the poetics of heroic poems, and
they implicitly revealed the modes in which the singer realised himself: the singer
as a carrier and preserver of the historical knowledge of the (narrow or broader)
collective; the singer as the central figure of a performative (occasionally ritualised)
situation; the singer as a voice of conscience, the one who shapes and redefines
the cultural memory of a community (this role being particularly activated and
explicitly expressed in chronicle-type poems). Examination of a more recent layer
of epic (chronicle-type) singing points to certain changes in the manner of introducing the singer into the actual poem, that is, on the level of the so-called authorial
comments (the established image of a singer/gusle player as a national bard or the
voice of the people).

Analysis of contemporary material (recorded in the field, in the course of

folkloristic interviews and during performances given by gusle players), reveals
possibilities for incorporating a broad range of motifs into the introductory formulas
(refrains). The shaping of the figure of the gusle player in these texts ranges from
linking the singer and his instrument in an unobtrusive manner (through established
formulative invocations, already accepted as part of the tradition), through emphasising those aspects of the social role primarily connected with the preservation of
knowledge about the (heroic) past, to the advent of hypertrophied (authorial) comments placing the singer (who is also the author in some cases) in the position of a
commentator of current political events.

The Story about a Rich Man and His Son-in-Law (U 930)

Summary
The paper deals with the depiction of the hero of the story about a rich man
and his son-in-law (U 930), focusing on the examples provided by Serbian 19thand 20th-century sources. A great number of variants contain an identical structure
(fate determination three counter-actions fate fulfilment), which served as a basis
for analysing the episodes. Particular attention was paid to comparisons with other
genres (simple forms) where the same motifs occur in connection with the protagonist,
that is to say, the same structure of the heros biography. Myths, epic poems, fairy
tales, legends, pseudohistorical tradition, also speak of, for example, the exposure
and saving of a persecuted child (dealt with in the classical works by von Hahn,
Raglan, Rank, Campbell, de Vries, Dundes, D. Miller). The difference, however,
lies in the depiction of the hero, who is entirely passive in the stories about destiny;
what his own life testifies to is the supremacy of destiny, which points to a certain
degree of exemplariness and didacticism of this group of stories, thereby confirm-

ing the power of various genres (different spiritual preoccupations and manner of
presentation). The ethnological basis is also present in the most important motifs of
the story (exposure, initiation, places of death, family relations established through
a wedding, elements of current folk life), also gets subordinated to the depiction of
destiny, as does the hero himself.
