COURSE INFORMATION OVERVIEW This course aims to develop your practical techniques and skills in teaching language classes and for managing your classroom. During the course, we will cover various methods and techniques for both presenting language and teaching skills lessons. Basic classroom management microskills will be covered, including such issues as eliciting, concept-checking, instruction giving, managing feedback, grouping students and correction techniques. METHODOLOGY This course will oer a variety of study methodologies: presentation, video, group work, workshops, role play and microteaching. Emphasis will be placed on sharing ideas through discussions, role play, game-like activities and workshops, and upon re ection on lessons learned from input, discussion with your peers and feedback to your microteaching. As a practical-based course, you will also have the chance to try out many of the techniques you will learn about. BOOKS & RESOURCES Tasks for Teacher Education: a re ective approach by Rosie Tanner & Catherine Green ISBN978-0-582-31663-8 (publ: Longman) Students will need to purchase the course textbook. The instructor will provide all worksheets in the form of either prepared handouts or downloadable PDF les. An online course Moodle will be utilized for downloading worksheets; uploading assignments and the re ective journal; further information and student passwords will be provided during the rst week of class. EVALUATION 1. Re ective Journal (20%) Involves you writing at regular intervals during the course about the ideas covered, developing an awareness of your beliefs and attitudes as a teacher, and re ecting on how you are developing. 2. Microteaching 1 (20%) - involves teaching an activity during the semester. The emphasis is on having the chance to teach in a supportive environment, try out some ideas, have the chance to observe and learn from your peers and constructively re ect on you own and others teaching. Microteaching 2 (20%) - involves teaching an activity at the end of the semester. In addition to the the rationale given for undertaking microteaching 1, this second microteaching activity will also be video recorded for analysis and re ection. 3. Microteaching Video Re ection (20%) - Re ection on your teaching on basis of a video recording of your microteaching. 4. Participation (20%) - Active involvement in class activities, providing feedback to classmates, completing tasksheets.
