Teacher as a non profession

5 reasons.

The teaching profession in Malaysia today is still lack of certain professional characteristic in order to be classified as a profession. These non-professional characteristic are summarized as follows.

1. Teaching job is not restricted to those trained teacher only. A person without a qualified teaching certificate can also be a teacher, as long as the person is doing a teaching job.

2 Not every teacher is a member of any teacher association. As such, these nonmembers do not need to observe the Code of Ethics of the teacher organization.

3 Neither one of the teacher organization is vested with the power to control the number of new member, nor have the right to expel the members if they do not observe the Code of Ethics.

4 A teacher has only limited autonomy because a lot of decisions are usually made by the school authority

5 Teacher posses different academic qualification such as SPM, STPM, and university degree, and were placed under different salary schemes.

6 The teaching career is regarded as a professional profession because of the following factors :

There is a continuity of education for teachers

The knowledge that forms the base of this profession is autonomous and is developed by people from related knowledge of fields

It is an important career in the country

A teacher is regarded as an expert in education where the status of expert teacher and master teacher have been created by the Ministry of Education

This profession is a job that does not look for profits but functions to give service to mankind without differentiating any individuals
