Choosing a career is a complex
and long-term process. College
students switch majors many
times before they finally chose a
field.

Teaching, is however, a disillusioning
career for many people. They may
enjoy some aspect of classroom life but
they become dissatisfied with
education in general, citing low
prestige, low pay, and petty problems
associated with classroom teaching as
important factors in their decision to

candidates have been
characterized as highly
idealistic, loosely
formulated, deeply seated,
and traditional.
Teacher candidates’ beliefs
about diversity may be viewed
as simplistic, they hold
strong images of teaching,
both positive and negative.
✘These beliefs influence how they
approach their teacher education
program. Perhaps because of the
strength of their images of good
and bad teaching, these students
express confidence in their
knowledge of teaching and in
their own abilities to teach.
