UNIT 1 – FACILITATING LEARNER-CENTERED TEACHING

REFLECTION PAPER

I have learned in Unit 1 that learner-centered teaching is more focused on having

students evaluate their own learning while being guided by the instructor. Teachers facilitate
students use of their critical and creative thinking when speaking and doing tasks, and the
teacher will also lead them if they have corrections. It is a great strategy in the classroom for
the learner to become the center of attention. By this, they will constantly build their self-
esteem by asking questions and volunteering in recitations or a specific activity because some
of the students are facing low confidence, which can lead to them not engaging in the class.
Thus, they will not be able to learn effectively and efficiently. I believe that our curriculum
has been successful in producing such a high-quality education by generating this method
because, as we go back to the past curriculum, it is more teacher-centered learning. As an
example, learners would only listen when the teacher was lecturing. However, in our new
curriculum, which is learner-centered teaching, both students and instructors work
independently. Additionally, it is stated in the five dimensions of learner-centered teaching
that students should analyze the content or lessons thoroughly rather than memorize them.
Memorization will not actually help the learner adapt to or learn some of the lessons because
it doesn’t offer sufficient knowledge. While reflecting on their learning will allow students to
step back from their learning experience, helping them to develop critical thinking skills and
improve their performance by analyzing what they have learned and how far they have come.
Further, I realize that we are in a diverse environment in which many students have different
beliefs, skills, backgrounds, and learning styles, which will not hinder learning; that's why we
have teachers to facilitate and empower us. Most significantly, it's a great opportunity to
nurture your uniqueness and creativity. This kind of strategy should be limited and still
strictly regulated by our dear instructors in order to be able to produce such an effective and
professional student. Overall, it exceeded my expectations for this lesson and expanded my
knowledge in understanding this kind of educational strategy.
