A poro-elastic Finite Element Model to Describe the Time-Dependent Response of Lumber Inter-vertebral Disc

M. Nikkhoo, M. Haghpanahi, J.L. Wang

Introduction
Inter-vertebral disc have poro-elastic characteristics and it has non-linear elastic characteristics like other soft tissue Objective Develop and validate non-linear poro-elastic model as an infrastructure to understanding of how different variables in this validated model affect the time dependent response of IVD

Materials and Methods

Axis-symmetric model Solid material deform, fluid moves relative solid matrix

Short term creep response 800N loading for 20 min 440N loading for 10 min

Long term creep response 850N loading for 16 hours 440N loading for 8 hours

Response of poro-elastic model subject to cyclic loading

Cyclic loading is applied at 1 Hz, 0.1 Hz ,0.01 Hz Dynamic stiffness values are decreased with the decreasing frequency.

Two cases of cyclic loading compared with prolonged compression

Conclusion
Reduction of frequency decrease the dynamic stiffness of the inter-vertebral disc which was in agreement with the results of in vitro tests. AXIAL displacement in the direction of compressive loading is depends on in cyclic loading.
