Physical Activity and Nutritional Coordinator (PANCo) Accountable to Nursery Manager

Nutritional Coordinator Responsibilities


Healthy Eating Champion (HEC) Ensure your role as HEC is known by all staff and parents in the setting. Promote positive dining experiences for children that take place in a welcoming and clean environment which promotes Healthy Eating (HE) and provides a positive social experience for children of all ages. Monitor and report any changes that may need to be made. Promote HE practices to other staff. Role model positive HE practices to children and encourage / support all staff to do likewise. Maintain own knowledge of HE, Nutrition, Drinking and Weaning practices through courses, meetings attendance and research. Be confident to demonstrate how HE and the settings HE policy is carried out in practice. Ensure the HE element of the Healthy Early Years Award standards are implemented, followed and promoted to all who access the setting. Parents / Families Liaise with parents regarding HE practices, highlighting the nurserys food policy to new parents on joining the setting. Ensure parents receive adequate and appropriate feedback regarding meals. Arrange HE promotion events, displays, advice and guidance for parents and carers.

Operational Activities In conjunction with nursery owners, manager and cook, ensure HE standards, policy and practices are met and regularly reviewed. Menus are balanced and take into consideration allergies and cultural requirements, in line with up to date national guidance. Menus are followed consistently and any changes made are known to the responsible persons and documented accordingly. Food items used follow the national sugar and salt guidance requirements for children.

Ensure fresh drinking water is available to all children and babies. Review curriculum plans and work with colleagues to ensure inclusion of opportunities for children to learn about Healthy Eating, Growing food, Importance of drinking water, Healthy cooking, Healthy teeth, Washing hands, Food tasting, Foods from other cultures. Oversee HE displays / information for children within the setting how often? what information? format? Liaise with room organisers regarding scheduling meal times to enable siblings to eat together from time to time. Oversee staff awareness / training and monitor to ensure portion sizes served are appropriate to the age and stage of children. Liaise with the childs key worker and parents regarding weaning p ractices when needed.

Promote positive physical activity (PA) experiences for children, including the reduction of periods of sedentary time, active lifestyles and purposeful physical activities. Promote PA practices to other staff. Role model positive PA practices to children and encourage / support all staff to do likewise. Maintain own knowledge of PA through courses, meetings attendance and research. Be confident to demonstrate how PA and the settings policy is carried out in practice. Ensure the PA element of the Healthy Early Years Award standards are implemented, followed and promoted to all who access the setting.

Parents / Families Liaise with parents regarding PA practices, highlighting the nurserys commitment to an active lifestyle and healthy physical development, to new parents on joining the setting. Ensure parents receive adequate and appropriate feedback regarding PA in the setting. Arrange PA promotion events, displays, advice and guidance for parents and carers. Operational Activities In conjunction with manager and room leaders, ensure Planning, observation and assessment explicitly reference childrens levels of activity and physical development. Opportunities are identified and provided to enable children to achieve their next steps in physical development. Children are supported and encouraged in their PA. An holistic approach to each individuals development and an appropriate balance within routines and activities to optimise growth and physical development. The provision of a stimulating and enabling environment, resources and activities to facilitate physical development. Protection against long periods of inactivity for children and a balanced programme of PA and opportunities for both walkers and non-walkers, as detailed in our Physical Activity Policy.
