The Scoop Of The Month

Gavaskar at BCCI helm

The Editors Column Dear Student, Welcome to the April edition of the Abhyaas Law Bulletin. The Supreme Court appointed Sunil Gavaskar as the interim president of the BCCI, till the IPL continues. The SCs decision also came as a breather for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), as both the teams have been allowed to participate in this edition of the League.

The Supreme Court appointed former India skipper, Sunil Gavaskar, as the interim president of the board to discharge the functions of the IPL 2014, until its final order on the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. A Bench of Justices A.K. Patnaik and Ibrahim Kalifulla, however, permitted both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals to participate in this years IPL that commences on April 16. The court directed that other responsibilities of the board be performed by BCCI vice-president Shivlal Yadav. However, there was no word on whether Srinivasan could continue with his ICC commitments or not. As of now, the ICC has raised no objections. The Bench said, We also direct that till we deliver the judgment, none of the employees of India Cements Limited or its associate companies [except cricket players or commentators] will perform any of the duties assigned to them by the BCCI. Appearing for the BCCI, senior counsel Aryama Sundaram took exception to the allegations levelled by senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for the Cricket Association of Bihar, against India captain M.S. Dhoni.

Ahead of the elections, politicians have been busy kicking up storms of multiple varieties. SP leader Abu Azmi said, Any woman married or not, should be hanged if she goes with a man, with, without her consent. This sparked off a controversy, which was duly picked up by the media and dissected. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said, Death sentence for rape is not fair... Boys will be boys... men make mistakes... We'll change anti-rape law if we come to power. In what can be termed as the most baffling tragedy in international aviation, Malaysian Airlines MH 370 disappeared from radar on March 8, somewhere at sea between Malaysia and Vietnam. No debris has been traced till now, although officials claim that they have been receiving pings from what could be its black box, from the Indian Ocean. Happy Reading!

Malaysian Airlines plane vanishes with 239 on board A Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 vanished on route to Beijing, on March 8, with 239 people on board. South-east Asian states joined forces to search waters between Malaysia and Vietnam. It had been expected to land in Beijing at 06:30 (22:30 GMT). Malaysia's transport minister had said there was no information on wreckage. The plane went off the radar south of Vietnam, according to a statement on the Vietnamese government website. Its last known location was off the country's Ca Mau peninsula although the exact position was not clear, it said. The Boeing B777-200 aircraft was carrying 227 passengers, including seven children, and 12 crew members. This vanishing prompted several theories, ranging from a terrorist activity to foul play to the aircraft breaking down. Reports also suggested that the pilot was in no state of mind to fly owing to personal issues and that he had tried a few dangerous maneuvers that hed never tried on a flight before. It was concluded that the aircraft ended in the Indian Ocean, indicating that one of the most expensive searches in history had been futile after there were false leads. However, satellite pictures showed some debris in the Indian Ocean, after which search teams were deployed, but it resulted in nothing because of bad weather conditions. A few days later, pings from what was believed to be the aircrafts black box were registered in the Indian Ocean and search parties were deployed again. Considering the amount of time that has elapsed since the flight vanished, the black box would have run out of battery.
