E-Expo showcases Speed School and Engineering

The annual Engineering Expo,
formerly E-Days, will be held on
Saturday March 1, 2008 at the Uni-
versity of Louisville's Speed School
of Engineering. Engineering Expo,
referred to as E-Expo, is a major
event hosted by the Speed School
Student Council which attracts a
wide variety of people. The events
of the day are varied and include
high school competitions, a corpo-
rate career fair, undergraduate and
graduate level competitions, a key-
note address, lab tours, and an infor-
mational session for potential Speed
students.
High school students are invited
to E-Expo to participate in competi-
tions sponsored by student chapters
of professional engineering societies
at Speed School. These competi-
tions challenge students to apply the
principles of engineering, at a very
fundamental level, to complete ob-
jectives and win awards provided by
the dean of Speed school. High
schoolers are also able to interact
with university faculty, staff, and
students to enhance their under-
standing of the engineering field.
Graduate and undergraduate stu-
dents also participate in judged com-

petitions where they present research
projects in a variety of fields. This
year competitions will be judged on
presentation skills and technical un-
derstanding in divisions based on
degree. These competitions help
showcase the work of Speed School
students and the exhibits are avail-
able for public viewing.
Another major aspect of E-Expo
is the companies and corporations
that come to recruit students for co-
op positions and full time employ-
ment. While not every company
participates to hire students, E-Expo
provides an excellent networking
opportunity for students to interact
with companies and learn more
about opportunities in industry.
Information sessions will be held in
several different subject ar-
eas. Again, these are open to the
public and anyone can attend. One
session will discuss Speed School in
general and the different opportuni-
ties available at the University of
Louisville. Many university labs
will also be open for viewing, and
individuals will be available to an-
swer questions and demonstrate the
principles of the newest advances in
the engineering field.

E-Expo happens across Speed
School with multiple overlapping
events, but everything stops for the
Keynote address. The address this
year will be delivered by Dr. Bill
Hammack, The Engineer Guy. Dr.
Hammack is a professor at the Uni-
versity of Illinois and gives weekly
radio addresses on "Engineering and
Life." The Keynote address will be
held in Bigelow Hall, Miller Infor-
mation Technology Center and will
begin promptly at 11:30 AM. All
other E-Expo activities will be sus-
pended during the address.
Other notable events at E-Expo
include the arrival of an AH-64
Apache helicopter at 1:00 PM. The
takeoff of the Apache will signal the
end of E-Expo at 4:00 PM. Addi-
tionally, the Crime Buster Police
Cruiser will be on display behind the
JB Speed building starting at 12:30
PM.
This year's E-Expo is going to be
a very exciting event and the public
is welcome to enjoy the exhibits,
listen to the keynote, and learn more
about engineering in general.
