World Whiskey Day is Saturday, May 17th, but were starting the party
a day early! Join us Friday, May 16th for a whiskey tasting and talk
tailored just for the ladies (sorry guys!) with Meghan Leary, author of
the book Whiskey for Women.

Meghans passion for the brown goods market developed early, kindled by her
proud Irish American heritage and her familys love of horse racing: I hail from
a long line of successful salesmen, she says, who place their faith in God, fam-
ily and the two true symbols of the American spirit whiskey and thor-
oughbreds.

Meghan is a 12 year veteran of the industry, and will be showcasing the American
Whiskey Collection from Heaven Hill Distilleries of upstate NY. You will have a
chance to sample Evan Williams Straight Bourbon; Evan Williams 1783; Evan
Williams Single Barrel Bourbon; Bernheim Straight Wheat Whiskey; Larceny

Join the University Club Foundation for the 4th Annual Pinkster Celebration on Friday, June 6th from 6
- 8 p.m. This years event will feature award-winning journalist and author Paul Grondahl. Grondahl
has been a staff writer at the Albany Times Union since 1984, where his assignments have taken him
from the Arctic to Antarctica; from Northern Ireland to Africa; from New Orleans immediately after
Hurricane Katrina and Haiti after its catastrophic earthquake in 2010; and across New York State, from
Ground Zero on 9/11 to the Adirondack wilderness.

Grondahl will discuss his latest book, These Exalted Acres: Unlocking the Secrets of Albany Rural
Cemetery. It was published by the Times Union with support from the cemeterys board of trustees and
its benefactors and contains a historical overview, photographs, maps and biographies of 50 fascinating
people and monuments at Albany Rural Cemetery.

Event tickets are $30 and include a cocktail reception with light fare (cash bar) from 6-7 p.m. followed
by Mr. Grondhals presentation and a book signing. Books will be available for purchase, proceeds from which benefit
the nonprofit Times Union Hope Fund, which helps underprivileged children attend after-school programs and sum-
mer camps. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 518-463-1151 or via
www.uclubevents.blogspot.com. Proceeds from the Pinkster Celebration will support the cost of repairs and mainte-
nance that protect our historic building from deterioration and decline.

We hope you will consider joining the Honorary Committee. By doing so, you show your support in two ways: you pro-
vide an early and generous contribution to help support the up-front costs of the Pinkster Celebration, and you add your
name to a prestigious list of supporters of the University Club Foundation. Honorary Committee membership is $100

Doody from 8-10 p.m.

Geo, a phenomenal vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist, has been performing professionally for more than
30 years and his experience at entertaining audiences of all ages shines through the minute he hits the
stage. Join us for his versatile mix of Rock, Pop, R&B and Irish Pub Standards. Ala carte dinner available

Dear Club Members:

As your board plans for the University Clubs 113th Annual Meeting of the Membership on Friday, May 9, 2014, we
would like to share a preview of some of the updates we will provide.

The past few years have seen significant changes in the financial health of the University Club. In early 2011, the Club
convened a Special Budget Committee to make recommendations for the Clubs future.

The recommendations were to pay off back taxes, retire an outstanding line of credit, and fully fund the Defined Benefit
Pension Plan established for the Clubs employees. Thanks to the support of the U. Clubs membership, which I usually
describe as small but fiercely loyal, we have done all of those things, closing out the pension just last month. In addi-
tion, under the banner of the University Club Foundation, we have embarked on a bold and ambitious campaign to raise
funds to pay for long-deferred maintenance of our National Register-listed Clubhouse.

We hope that this preview of strategic actions taken by your board of directors will encourage you to participate in the
Annual Meeting on May 9 at 5:30 p.m. Financial and House committee reports will be presented and future plans of the
club will be discussed. You will also have the opportunity to cast your vote for Officers and Directors (see slate/ballot
below). Votes can be cast from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and election results will be announced at approximately 8:15 p.m. We
hope to see you at the meeting, and encourage you to stay for dinner as well. If you are unable to attend and/or cast your
vote on the day of the meeting, please contact Membership Director Ellen Dragonette at 518-463-1151 or via email at

It has truly been my honor and my pleasure to serve as President for the past year. I ask for your continued support, so we
can continue to make strides to enhance the vitality and viability of our University Club of Albany during the second half

All individuals on the ballot are currently on the board with the exception of Rob Crudden. Rob has a B.S. in Civil Engi-
neering from Clarkson University. He is currently a Captain in the NY Army National Guard and is serving as the Execu-
tive Officer for the 501st Ordnance Battalion based out of Glenville, NY. Some of his previous assignments have been:
Commander and Executive officer of an EOD Company, Liaison Officer, and emergency response Logistics Planner. In
these positions he has deployed to the Central Command Area of Responsibility, responded to the state emergencies of
Tropical Storms Irene / Lee and Superstorm Sandy, as well as participating in two Multinational Joint Overseas Training
events. Rob was raised in Warwick, RI and has lived in the Capital District since 2011, when he received a full time posi-
tion with the National Guard.
