HAPPY BUCKS AND OTHER DETAILS Tony Schoemehl opened the meeting with a very fitting Fathers Day message. Ron Mucovich related the coincidence of knowing the nice lady in Pennsylvania who wrote the thank you letter about Field Day which had been sent to her! Mary Sue Erickson reported that her quilting group which assists young mothers has just delivered 40 blankets to a parenting class, where they will be put to very good use. David Kruegel had a happy buck for successfully passing traffic school which covered his traffic transgressions. Daves story enabled Cliff Dochterman to recall a story of Mary Elena, who held graduate degrees in traffic school. It seems she was on the way home from traffic school when she was stopped by an officer for some infraction: but was let off with a warning, when the officer spotted the Rotary wheel in her window! Frank May had a happy buck in relaying the story of his son, who was doing a video for disabled athletes, and was followed by a drone with a camera.
Al Simonsen paid a happy buck for being able to buy a new set of golf clubs, since his were stolen from Gary Irwins car! This led to a very unhappy buck being given by Gary Irwin, who was the real victim. His car was broken into while at Lone Tree Golf Course losing golf clubs, cameras, computers and garage door opener. Sadly the thieves had reached Garys garage before he was able to return and his garage was also robbed. Jim and Linda Campbell had a buck to report on the successful selling various items formerly owned by Lindas Uncle Herman, at a Walnut Creek antique and crafts show. Kevin Reneau paid a buck to mention that he had very unexpectedly come across a set of golf clubs, cameras and other items! The green ticket was held by Mary Sue Erickson, but alas she was unable to find the white marble, so settled for $10.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION Rich Render reported that our last e-Waste collection netted $636 for the Clubs service fund. Again thanks to all of those who helped conduct the collection!
President Nora circulated a nice note from the Odyssey of the Mind teams for Moraga Rotarys support. Also a copy of the newspaper article regarding Moraga Rotary Field and St. Marys basketball players was distributed.
Frank May happily exchanged a blue badge for a red one with Roger Gregory, who successfully passed the rigorous list of new member expectations!
PROGRAM OF THE EVENING This evening our program was presented by Don & Linda Jenkins, who recently returned from a trip to Viet Nam to present LN4 prosthetic hands to needy persons. Although Don has been associated with The Rotary Foundation activities, he noted that many international projects are conducted without our Foundation funds and individually funded. Our Rotary District 5160 has long been a major sponsor of the LM-4 hands. They told of the exciting opportunity which an international experience provides the participants. A total of 500 LM-4 hands were taken to Viet Nam and fitted to so many people who had lost hands by industrial accidents and some land mines left after the war. Some excellent pictures illustrated how the hands were placed and the recipients were trained for their use. They reported that over 16,000 LM-4 hands have been distributed around the world. Clearly, their efforts have changed the
lives of many individuals who came to the distribution centers throughout Viet Nam. It was an outstanding program describing how Rotarians and spouses can volunteer to be a part of a very worthy Rotary service activity.
BOCCE BALL BASH NEXT SATURDAY Dont forget, the big Rotary District Bocce Ball Bash is next Saturday in Martinez. It is a great fellowship event with over sixty teams representing Rotary Clubs in our area. Moraga Rotary teams will be led by our intrepid bocce master, Angelo Costanza! Remember 9:30 am for registering and warm-up and play begins at 10:00 in the park across the railroad tracks in downtown Martinez.
THE EDITORS COMMENTS Last week we had the opportunity to see the enthusiasm of the students, parents and teachers who attended our meeting to receive the plaques for Moraga Rotary Field Day. Elaine Franks, Principal of Rheem School made some very significant remarks about the importance of Rotarys Annual Field Day to the children. She noted that it is a valuable lesson in the process of competitive activities. Some win and the others can learn a lesson from the experience. The big lesson is sportsmanship. Be a good sport if you win and learn something if you lose! Sometimes Rotarians conduct projects in a rather routine fashion and do it because we have always done it. We may not pause to realize how important an event, such as Field Day, can be to the youngsters of our community, who look forward to and actually prepare for the activities of the day. So, once again, let us thank Tony Schoemehl, for his work as this years chairman, and Al Simonson for his many previous years in conducting Field Day. In addition we appreciated everyone who helped in registering the contestants, the judges, the St. Marys College basketball players, and those who did all of the set-up and take-down. You deserve the credit for a very significant community service activity Moraga Rotary Field Day.

THE LAST WORD There were 11 people ten men and one woman hanging onto a rope that came down from the rescue helicopter. The rope was stretched to the maximum. They all decided that one person should get off, because if they didnt, the rope would break and everyone would die. No one could decide who should go, so finally, the woman gave a really touching speech saying how she would give up her life to save the others, because women were used to giving up things for their husbands and children, giving in to men, and not expecting anything in return. When she finished speaking, all the men started clapping. Never under estimate the power of a womans message, nor the consequences of random applause!
