Use of Wind Tunnel-Model
Testing
• •What is the purpose of the wind
tunnel?
• A wind tunnel simulates a high-speed
stream of air to flow past a model of
the
• object being tested.
• Testing of aircraft

Introduction
• •What is the wind tunnel?
• A chamber through which air is forced at
controlled velocities in order to study the
effects of
• aerodynamic flow around airfoils or scale
models.

Description of Parts
• The parts of a wind tunnel are
• •a settling chamber to straighten the
flow and control turbulence intensity.
• •a contraction zone to takes a large
volume of low-velocity air and reduces
it to a small volume of high-velocity
air without creating turbulence
• •a test section where the test article
and sensors are installed
• •a diffuser to slow down the speed of
airflow and a drive section to provide
the force and pull air through the wind
tunnel
Development Plan
•Search existing educational wind tunnels in
the market and compare their designs,
capabilities and costs.
•Design and construct a small cardboard

prototype for finding potential

manufacturing and assembly issues.
•Search for available fan capacities and scale

up the size of cardboard model accordingly.

•Determine dimensions of each part of the

wind tunnel and finish CAD drawing

•Construct and assemble the wind tunnel

with metal sheets, plexiglass and fiber glass

structure enhancement, honeycombs and a
fan.

Design of a Wind Tunnel and
the Cardboard Prototype

Determine an fan, modified from Aerorocket wind tunnel.

The basic desigopen-looped suction wind tunnel powered by a n
was done by Donald D.Baalsof NASA.
Test section dimension is 7”(height) x 12”(length) x10”(width) for
the cardboard model
Cardboard Prototype
Contraction Zone
• •Polycarbonate honeycomb core sheet,
color:clear, 1/4"cell x 1.5"thick, 22" x 31", PC-
10.0-1/4 (PC-density-cell size)
• •Enhance the structure with multi-layers of
fiberglass cloth and resins.
Test Section
• •The test section is made of plexi-glass with
a wooden platform to mount the test
model.
• •The model mounting device is built by
parts from a robotic lamp and capable of
rotating in (φ,θ,ω)
Diffuser and the Installation of
a Driving Fan
Final Assembly
Flow Visualization
• Flow Visualization by Condensation Cloud Condensation
cloudVortices•The clouds are formed because the air has
cooled to the point that the ambient water vapor
condenses due to a lower pressure around the aircraft
body surfaces. It occurs when weather and humidity
permit. No man-made instrumentation is
required.•Examples of lift-induced condensation and tip-
induced trailing vortices are shown below

Future Scope of Wind Tunnel
• Wind tunnel helps shape future
aircraft

• Purdue University engineers have
developed a wind tunnel that is the
only one of its kind in the world
capable of running quietly at
"hypersonic" speeds, helping
researchers to design advanced
aircraft and missiles.
