NAVIGATORS MESSAGE
Is it December already? We have some very special
dates in December. December 7th, 1941, a date that
will live in infamy. Let us never forget the unprovoked
dastardly attack on our naval, air and ground forces on
Oahu and Pearl Harbor. We should never let our guard
down again.
December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception, when we celebrate the pure and sinless
conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the
pontifical feast day of several counties, including the
United States, and was first solemnized as a Holy Day of
Obligation in 1708.
December 9th will be the 118th meeting of Army and
Navy on the gridiron. Why is this an important date? All
the men on the field that day will, at a later date, be on
the battle field protecting the God given freedoms that so
many of us take for granted. I should also add that my
older is an Annapolis grad, and my younger son is a
West Point grad. I always root for the winner.
December 20th is our assembly Christmas party. The
festivities start at 7:30 at the Patchogue council, and the
cost is $20 per person or $30 for a couple. There is an
optional Secret Santa Grab Bag that is a lot of fun.
Ladies bring a gift for a lady, and men bring a gift for a
man. Cost of the gift should be no more than $10. We
are limited to 150 people, so contact Bob Elliott for

December 25th is Christmas Day. In Advent as we
prepare ourselves for the celebration of the birth of Jesus
Christ, we will hear and read about increasing attacks on
religious Christmas displays. These are not attacks by
ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, or Abu Sayyif. These will
be attacks by secularists who use the First Amendment
as a weapon to try to eliminate all public displays of
religion. The purpose of the First Amendment was not to
protect us from religion, but to protect our right to
openly practice and express our religion in our daily
lives. Be proud to be a Catholic. Live a good Christian
life. Be an example for others to follow. Dont be afraid

The assembly memorial mass will be held on May 6,
2018 at St. Isidore in Riverhead. Mass time is 1:30 and
is followed by a meal at Polish Hall. We will tell you
more about this event in later issues. The Night at the
races fund raiser has been tentatively changed to April 7,
2018. More information will be given on this even later,
also.
This is the last issue of The Commanders Log that be
sent out by U.S. Mail. I apologize for those of you
without computer access. We will have copies of the
newsletters at each of our meetings. We are also hoping
that some of the brother Sir Knights who receive The
Log by email can make a copy for a friend in need.
Lady Patricia and I wish you a very merry, happy, and
holy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
There is an old joke where a congressman reportedly
said, A million here; a million there; pretty soon we are
talking about real money. Our budget has expenses and
revenues projected around $31,000 and thats real
money. The budget includes aggressive fund raisers.
This is the primary reason why this will be the last
printed edition sent out via the post office. Those who do
not get email can get their copies at the meeting.
Such penny pinching is necessary because I would rather
see a thousand dollars be directed to charity than to
something that we have no assurance is actually being
read by the members who get it.
We need active participation, especially at our
fundraisers so that we can have the resources to direct
our action to proper patriotic charity as per our degrees
principle.

WHO WAS JACKIE?
Last year I published an article, Who was Cmdr. John J Shea FA USN?
This year I would like to talk about the other person in the photo, Jackie.
John R. Jack Shea passed away a few years ago on March 14. He was 78.
A native of Arlington who graduated from Boston College High School, Dr.
Shea was awarded a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship which
encouraged college students to consider teaching careers at the university
level during his senior year at BC. He later earned his doctorate in classical
philology at Harvard University.
Interviewed by Boston College Magazine in 1991, Dr. Shea, by then himself
a father of three, reflected on the letter and its impact. In the space of
several handwritten pages, he put down things that I hope I have
communicated to my kids. I think what made the letter so appealing [to the
public] is that he took some thoughts which were probably shared by many,
and expressed them very directly.
The fact that these feelings of patriotism and civic values were voiced by a
Catholic, he added, was significant at the time, since Catholics were not yet
viewed as part of the American mainstream.
BC colleagues said that Dr. Shea enjoyed a successful and productive career
as a teacher, researcher and translator. One of his major achievements was
his extensive translation, from Renaissance Latin into English, of 16th-century physician Johann Weyer's treatise De
praestigiis daemonum, regarded by many scholars one of the 10 most significant books of all time, according to
Sigmund Freud as an important work for Weyers encyclopedic grasp of biblical, classic and patristic literature. In
addition to translating the book, his colleagues noted, Dr. Shea provided most of the biblical and classical citations for the
book's notes.
Jack was respected and loved because of who he was and how he treated students, colleagues and other people, said
Classical Studies Research Professor Dia Philippides.
