December is upon us and we come to the end of another year. Its always such a
busy time, and it is no different for us in the Knights of Columbus. In addition to all
of the hustle and bustle of the Advent Season, we still have to take care of business
by making sure all of our end of year paperwork is filled out and filed, especially
the Fraternal Survey form 1728, which is important because it is how our Order
knows about all the great Charitable work our Councils have been doing all year.
And I am proud to say that the Councils in the Third District, our District, are
among some of the busiest and most charitable in the Order! However, that being said, there is one
favor I would like to ask of all of you. As the days of December pass and Christmas gets closer and
closer, please try to remember what the season is truly all about. I know it's important to run around
and get all of your errands done. I know it's important to run around and get all of your shopping
done. But please don't forget to enjoy yourself and your family and friends this Christmas. Don't get
yourself all stressed out and uptight worrying about the little things. It doesn't matter. It's more im-
portant to celebrate the Joy and Love of Jesus that came into the world for you. Don't forget to wel-
come God's only Son into your home this Christmas. For without Him there is no Christmas, there is
no Joy, and there is no Love in the World.
On behalf of my wife Jessica and myself, I would like to wish all of you and your families a very
Joyous and Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy New Year.
Vivat Jesus

Thank you to the
Members of our
Council who
assisted the
Patchogue F.D. in
once again putting
the Christmas Lights
on the Big Tree at
St. Francis De Sales
on Saturday,
November 18th.
On Monday, November 20th, Our Council held its Annual Blue Mass. At this Memorial Mass we remembered the
Following Brother Knights who have Passed on this Year: Philip M. Manitta, Dennis Barone, Edward J. Hughes,
Peter J. Fournier, Rupert W. Behan, Henry Kronbach and Thomas E. Felice, as well as our Sister Columbiettes and
Members of our local P.D. and F.D.s. Our Chaplin Fr. Bill Winters celebrated this special Mass and as always did a
magnificent job. We would all like to thank Ted Michaels and the members of his ensemble from St. Joseph the
Worker Choir for the music. And of course, all of the Brother Knights who assisted in the set up, take down, and in all
of the different ways necessary to make this a successful event. The cooperation and the readiness to help from the
members of this Council always makes me proud. And of course we want to thank the members from the Commander
Shea Fourth Degree Honor Guard who never let us down, and who are always there to answer the call whenever and
wherever they are requested. Its no wonder Fr. Bill, rightfully so, referred to them as the finest Honor Guard in
Suffolk County.

Christmas Creed
I believe in Jesus Christ and in the beauty of the gospel begun in Bethlehem.
I believe in the one whose spirit glorified a little town; and whose spirit still brings music to per-
sons all over the world, in towns both large and small.
I believe in the one for whom the crowded inn could find no room, and I confess that my heart still
sometimes wants to exclude Christ from my life today.
I believe in the one who the rulers of the earth ignored and the proud could never
understand; whose life was among common people, whose welcome came from persons of hungry
hearts.
I believe in the one who proclaimed the love of God to be invincible:
I believe in the one whose cradle was a mother's arms, whose modest home in Nazareth had love
for its only wealth, who looked at persons and made them see what God's love saw in them, who by
love brought sinners back to purity, and lifted human weakness up to meet the strength of God.
I confess my ever-lasting need of God: The need of forgiveness for our selfishness and greed, the
need of new life for empty souls, the need of love for hearts grown cold.
I believe in God who gives us the best of himself. I believe in Jesus, the son of the living God, born in
Bethlehem this night, for me and for the world. Amen.

FALLING AWAY
To begin with, most of the unfamiliar faces we see at Christmas Mass are Catholics. And while there are typically some out-of-
town visitors in the mix, most are parishioners. They include those who come to Mass only on Christmas and Easter, sometimes
referred to as C & E Catholics.
You probably have C & E Catholics in your family, perhaps even your immediate family. Parents sometimes tell me how they
lament the fact that their teenage or adult children no longer practice the faith. We tried to do everything right, they say.
Where did we go wrong?
Its a source of special sorrow for a faithful Catholic when his or her spouse stops practicing the faith. Often families never dis-
cuss this situation, figuring it will do more harm than good or just provoke needless arguments. That having been said, those of
us with such family members are probably aware, at least vaguely, of the reasons why they have stopped practicing their faith.
Some are disaffected Catholics. Even if they check in by attending Mass once or twice a year, they are angry at the Church for
one reason or another. They may disagree with Catholic teaching or feel they were mistreated by someone representing the
Church. Others did not feel welcomed in their parish church or failed to find help in time of need.
Some never really encountered the Lord or knew their faith; eventually, they no longer saw the point in coming to Mass each
week. Often it is sports or other activities that simply crowd out the practice of the faith, not to mention the prevalent view that
one can be spiritual without being religious. Finally, lets not forget the all-too-common tendency of fallen human nature to
drift away from God.
When we arrive at Mass on Christmas Eve, what should be our reaction to all these people we dont usually see at Mass? Of
course, we should gladly welcome them, even if it means giving up our usual parking place or our favorite pew. But I think our
response should go deeper.

The Lady of The Rosary
The small Portuguese Village of Fatima is renowned by Christians for the religious visions
that took place starting May 13, 1917 ending October 13th when three peasant children
pasturing their little flock of sheep were witness to apparitions of the Virgin Mary. When the
children asked for her name, she said "I am The Lady of The Rosary". Many books and
movies have been written and produced about these apparitions, especially the last one, The
Miracle of the Sun when 70,000 eyewitnesses saw the sun dance in the morning sky.
The Diocese of Rosario build a shire, called the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary on the
site to commemorate these events; a must visit for everyone, Christian or not. Other must see
sites in the world are the Vatican, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Bethlehem, among
others including Medjugorje, Bosnia.
On October 15, 2010, Donna and I had the joy and honor of visiting Fatima, a few days after
rd
the 93 anniversary. What I expected to see was a little square filled with pictures, religious
symbols, a church, of course, and visitors crowding around a holy shrine of some kind. But,
what we saw and experienced was quite unexpected, I might even say inspiringly so. The vil-
Donna and Phil Butler lage was small, yes as expected, but towering before us was a two hundred foot tall Basilica of
Our Lady of the Rosary steeple topped with a large shining cross. The entrance to the square
from the village was quite common and understated, again, as expected. But the 1000' x 2000' square of gleaming concrete
and tile was overwhelming. In the middle of the square was a small building that housed the original one-hundred year old
shepherd's shed; the location of the apparitions. Also, there are three churches, one being the
fore mentioned Cathedra Basilica and a smaller one in which was hosted a Mass every hour in many languages. We had the
joy and blessing to attend the only one in English held during our visit at twelve noon.
Alongside and running the entire 2000' length of the square was a four foot wide strip of smooth tile upon which people of
all faiths come to prostrate themselves on their knees to show penance and reverence to God and pray under the eyes of
Mother Mary; most crawl on their knees back and forth the entire distance, 2000 feet, of the square. Watching this and know-
ing the pain that these pilgrims must endure, you can't help but to tear up. If you are Muslim, you are required to go to Mecca,
if healthy, once in your lifetime. As a Christian, though not required, you must go to the Vatican or a holy site like Fatima at
least once in your life. It may change your life forever.

COLUMBIETTES CORNER
WE CARE - WE SHARE
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving and my officers and I wish you all a Merry
Christmas.
November 12th we celebrated Gerry Restifos two years as President, with a testimonial at Sicila
DOros. It was a wonderful day with 39 of our sister Columbiettes and Knights wishing her well.
At our November meeting, it was brought to my attention that some of the Columbiettes would like copies of their
sister Columbiettes phone numbers and addresses. Due to the privacy law we cannot issue a list without
permission of the parties involved. To resolve this situation there will be a sign up list at the Secretarys table at
our January meeting for anyone wishing to be added to this list. After the meeting I will take the list and print out
a copy for each member signed up. If for some reason you will not be at the meeting and wish to be on this list,
please email me or call me and I will add your name. It was also brought to my attention that many of our sister
Columbiettes do now know what is going to be happening at the meetings because they do not have emails. To
resolve this situation my officers will have calling lists and will be asked to contact those Columbiettes if there will
be anything special happening during the meeting. You will not be called if the meeting will be a general
meeting. We will be having our annual Coat Drive for Kids during our January meeting. Please include hats,
gloves and scarves.
There is still seats left for THE NATIVITY at the SIGHT AND SOUND. Can you imagine a play about the Nativity with live animals.
