MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday
in the United States for remembering the people who
died while serving in the country's armed forces. The
holiday, which is currently observed every year on the
last Monday of May, will be held on May 28, 2018.
The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. It
marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation
season, while Labor Day marks its end. The holiday,
from latest to earliest, is slightly more likely to fall on
May 30, May 28 or May 25 (58 in 400 years each)
than on May 27 or May 26 (57), and slightly less
likely to occur on May 31 or May 29 (56).
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials,
particularly to honor those who have died in military
service. Many volunteers place an American flag on
each grave in national cemeteries.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans
Day – Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men
and women who died while serving, whereas Veterans
Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.
The St. John XXIII assembly will be placing flags at
the Pinelawn Memorial Park Veterans Cemetery, and
our own Assembly will be placing flags at the
Calverton National Cemetery on the Saturday before
Memorial Day. Many veterans and civic groups,
including scouting troops, register to take various
locations among these two national cemeteries, placing
the flags according to the instructions of the
cemeteries, and then returning the next week to
remove these flags and to place them in the
appropriate containers where they will be inspected
and used again next year.
In addition to the decorating of graves with flags, Memorial
Day is also a time for parades. Our Honor Guard will be
attending the parade that goes down Main Street in Smithtown,
from Singer Lane to the Town Hall by Redwood Lane. The
parade is scheduled to start at Noon, but I would recommend
you arriving much earlier if you want to get a good spot to
view the parade.
HONOR GUARD REPORT
Parades are not the only thing that the Honor Guard turns out
for. The Flag Detail is required for meetings (chapter and
assembly). Masses and wakes are another two major reasons
for turnouts. The old “regalia” is still permitted for use until at
least the end of the next fraternal year (June 30th 2019). We
always can use more Sir Knights in the honor guard. For more
information, contact our Commander.
