Bill Uphaus was in one
day and we were talking
about the Triple Crown
and if the horse California
Chrome could get the job
done after winning two of
the first three races.
Its a tough thing to
do, but hes a good horse,
Bill said.

In the meantime, Billy
brought in a scrap book
made by his wife Louise
that she started when she
was 16 years old. Would
you believe she was a
jockey, and a darned good
one at that?
Newspapers from a
rather large area took note.
Her father, I.H. Halverson,
was a race horse owner/
trainer.
Heres where Louise
jockey career took off, in
her own words:

PROPOSAL- I propose that we cease writing
anymore probing, pot shoting articles in the BUZZwhich are simplex or 1-way. I suggest we have further
discussion and questioning in the next Covenants
Owners meeting on the 20th- that can be duplex 2-way
conversations. The information offered by ALL sides of
the issues will be more meaningful.

APPRECIATION- I do want to say that I was
impressed with Merrill Frantzs responses. I acknowledge
and respect Frantz and Terry-Lees willingness to speak
out publically. Their Candid Talk is stand up, unlike
the little weasels threaten liable and slander and wont
speak of their thoughts, plans, and actions as they relate
to St Marie. (Aint that A HOOT!)

MAIN FOCUS- My main focus is the question asked
over and over: DEFINE the DOLLARS, can you IN
PERSON answer that? What is your simple BUSINESS
PLAN as a developer/investor as well as a Village
BUSINESS PLAN as an ASPIRING LEADER of the
Village Association? Need help? ....look at the current
SMCA and VILLAGE association budgets that are
OPEN TO ALL. Simple business plans with associated
specified planned work, planned expenses, percentages
of planned monies spent (including INSURANCE
COVERAGE on all properties), and balance sheet with
reserve funds. All necessary for sustained work to
maintain the condo units ..... Defined Obligated
Dollars disclosed- no exemptions, no exceptions, no
loop holes for anyone.

COUNTY TAX RECORDS- Uncollected taxes in St
Marie as of 6-6-14:
1. Kelly, SMDC, VPI- 84 condos- $665,000
2. EMS, GTMS- 152 condos- $206,000
3. NSM-Mitchell- 370 condos- $79,000
4. Bakken-Base Exchange- $5,000
5. DTM- 133 condos- $2,300
TOTAL- 740 condos- $957,300

NOTE: It appears that DTM is in the best shape
and possibly capitalized to do some DEVELOPING.
As long as they DONT bother other owners in ANY
way, do whatever they want with THEIR property and
money- I WISH THEM WELL.
Again, I will CEASE FIRE on my writins
for awhile....until after some meetings and more
information comes out.

Easy Valley by Ted Easy by Teddy foaled by
Sun Alowa by Sun Brier.
Also they purchased Dr. Pat, a big
brown gelding two years old by Cosmic Bomb
and foaled by Miss Amela.

Daddy and I started training the three
horses by the first of April, but the only time I
could be of any help was on weekends. In May
I stayed home two weeks to help out.

All this time Easy seems full of spunk
and wants to get out and go. Dr. is slow and
easy but seems to have great promise. Pug is
full of zip but hasnt grown too much since last
year but filled out a lot.

We plan on going to the State Line the
23rd for our first race meet this year.
June 2, 1954
Well, the races at the State Line were called off
because the big boss said the crowd would not
come and it was too wet out.

There seemed to be just as big a crowd
there as ever and we have raced on worse
tracks than that one.

The free buffalo was served and even us
jockeys got our share. Believe me, it was good!

The racing form is also here. (Buzz note:
Louise was scheduled to jockey in six of the
eight races on the card.)
June 13, 1954 Wolf Point
Charrio Club Race Meet

The track was terrible. Mud, water and

still raining some more on the day. But they

didnt call it off as we expected.

Easy Valleys hind left leg was all swollen
up, though showing great improvements, but
we could not take her tor race. To fill the three
year old race we had to enter Doc and Pugze
in the same race with Marlen up on the mare. I
had 5th hole and Marlen 4th. They shortened
the races to a 3/8 mile and Doc was soon way
ahead with Pugze losing third by a neck.

Smiling Eyes came fist out of the gate and
under the line first by three to four lengths. All
in all we had a pretty good day. I raked in $45.
Not bad for one day I dont think. (Buzz note:
Louise won two of the seven races that day in
Wolf Point and also placed third.)

June 20th we go to Scobey for a real day.
Im Queen and have to lead the parade riding
in the new saddle. Under the program I have
the pictures Larry Bowler put in the Leader.
June 20, 1954

As you can see by the programs we didnt
do too bad. Except Diane got hurt in the
rescue race and was layed up in the hospital
for three days.

J.D. Hughes accused me of cutting him
off with Doc in the 5/8 mile race when he
was riding Fair Pick. But nothing was done
about it and probably it was his own fault
any way. Danelsons are sort of mad at me but

theyll get over it in time I presume.

I cleared $45 in all.

Next were off to Flaxville June 27th, 1954. (Buzz note:
this was the second consecutive win by Dr. Pat with Louise
aboard.
June 27, 1954

Raked in $32.50 out of the deal and we didnt run our
horses there. Had a lot of fun but in the mile I got pocketed
and lost first for Wes who didnt seem to take it too good. Hope
I can do better next time.

We, Daddy and I, are leaving for Estevan the 29th. Hope
we do something but Easy isnt in condition quite yet since
we couldnt work her when she had a bad leg.
July 1, 1954 (Estevan Fair)

Real muddy track but we won a 2nd and a 3rd and didnt
get a chance to run Pugze. Doc lost 1st by about 6 inches.
Easy was nosed out of 2nd. (Buzz note: this was Dr. Pats first
loss. Said Louise of this fierce competitor: If Dr. Pat won, he
held his head high and pranced all over the place. But if he
lost, even by a nose, he knew it and his head was hung low and
he would pout. The reason they couldnt run Little Pug was
because the two-day race was rained out.)

From the Daniels County Leader regarding the Estevan
horse races: ... The Irving Halverson stable, with daughter
Louise the jockey, gathered a second and two thirds in three
races. The second money winner for Halversons was in the
second race when Dr. Pat, came out of the starting gate and
fell to his knees before getting on with the field and coming in
right behind Lucky Marion. Cromwells Smiling Eyes copped
a third in the fifth race. Wes says the track had a skiddy surface
and that Smiling Eyes is too smart a horse to go too fast on
something like that.
From the Regina Leader Post daily newspaper about
the races in Estevan: ... A jockey many people watched was
16-year-old Louise Halverson who rode in three races and
won two thirds and a second. Her second place came in the
second race of the day, the fast five-furlong event.

Riding Dr. Pat, she missed first position by about a foot
when Lucky Marion with the experienced Fred Bird piloting
won the contest. Miss Halverson is the daughter of I.H.
Halverson, well-known horse owner from Scobey. This was
her first trip to Canada...
The Regina paper also revealed that this was just the
second-ever female jockey to race in Estevan.

As bigger races with huge purses were on the horizon for
Dr. Pat as summer progressed, Louise was living in those days
that women werent allowed to do certain things; riding in
these bigger races was one of them.

In an interview with the Regina Leader Post, Louise said:
I have been riding for years and have always wanted to be a
jockey. If the rules in Saskatchewan allowed women jockeys on
Class A tracks I would have ridden Dr. Pat in the Handicap.

But, as her Daddys trainer, she didnt miss any trips to
the big tracks, either. And Dr. Pat, who made it to the finish
line in first place more often than not with Louises guidance,
continued to win, place and show.
From the Regina Leader Post, July 30, 1954, with the
headline, DR. PAT SPRINGS SURPRISE: A bay three-yearold that came out of nowhere (the good people of Scobey,
Montana, might object to the expression) took the spotlight
at the Regina Exhibition Racing Meet Thursday by virtue of a
great photo-finish victory in the $1,200 Queen City Handicap.
With a third-place finish in the $1,000 Saskatchewan Handicap
on Monday, the colt, Dr. Pat has made his only two starts on the
Western circuit notable ones after getting in some practice licks
at the country fairs...

... Dr. Pats fine victory, a new track record in the mile and
one-eighth third race, and double-figure payoffs in ever race
made Thursdays program a memorable one.

Dr. Pat kept on capturing headlines with exciting wins.

Louises mother, Ann Halverson, responded to a Canadian
newspaper while her husband was on a 28-day racing tour:
Heres some more dope on Dr. Pat...
Irvin calls me every Sunday and writes once a week.
In the last race Dr. Pat ra he had $10 worth of tickets on him
which returned $57. He asked me if he should sell Dr. Pat so
he isnt gone horse racing for a month at a time. I asked him
if he wanted to sell him and he said no, not very bad. So I said
keep him. We can run this spread without you for awhile, but
hurry home. He expects to start both horses twice more and
then they will be returning home.

Dr. Pat continued to be a major force in 1955. From the
Daniels County Leader: That Dr. Pat is still runnin like hell!
Owned by the Irvin Halverson family, ranchers in the Peerless
community, the four-year-old gelding has been seeing lots of
action this summer. He has six victories in 13 starts, which is
substantially more than adequate for any participant in the
broomtail activities.
Considering that the competition was at Winnipeg,
Regina and most recently at Calgary, Alberta, carrying the
colors of this county and the Scobey Saddle Club, we can
see where if it were like football and basketball teams of
comparable skill some places, there would be a caravan of cars
and torchlights from here to the border upon the homecoming
of the Halversons and their winged steed...
... Those Canadians have been getting more enthused
each year about the ponies, and this season its a horse from
Daniels County thats really setting them on their ears. Saw
Irvin yesterday who reports Dr. Pat was a winner again last
Saturday at Calgary for 7 furlongs on a heavy track, carrying 11
pounds of lead bringing the big geldings season record on
the Western Canadian Circuit to seven wins in 14 starts, and
his track earnings this year to more than $7,000.

All in all, Dr. Pat was a very impressive investment for the
Halverson family, and it was a pretty little lady named Louise
that got Dr. Pat off to the races in grand fashion.
