1981 and was raised in Lorain, Ohio. Matt began his football dream at St. Peter School in Lorain; and
WHEREAS, in 1998, Matt graduated from Elyria Catholic High School after completing a stellar career. At
Elyria Catholic Matt amassed 100 tackles, 26 for loss, and 11 sacks as a senior and was named a 1st Team All-
Ohio selection. He also played tight-end and running back. In 2002, he had his #34 jersey retired at the high
school; and
WHEREAS, Matt attended the Ohio State University from 1999 to 2002. While at Ohio State, Matt earned
the coveted Randy Gradishar Award as the team’s top linebacker and made all of the defensive calls. As a
senior, Matt helped his team to a national championship with a team-leading 11 tackles in one of the most
memorable games in college history against the University of Miami. Matt ended the year with a career high
121 tackles and ended his career with the 6th most career tackles for loss for Ohio State all-time; and
WHEREAS, Matt was selected First Team Defensive All American in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Matt was drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers and
has now spent 8 years in the NFL; and
WHEREAS, Matt is the first Lorainite to ever play in the Super Bowl as his Green Bay Packers battle the
Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, February 6, 2011; and
WHEREAS, on Sunday, February 6, 2011, the City of Lorain will re-name Broadway to “Matt Wilhelm
Lane”.
