and the meaning of the words the T uses.

the activities, but the teacher insists on their speaking.

PRE-SPEAKING
Time: 4 min.
Materials: A video and a photo of a character in a TV series
Interaction: T\Ss
What students do: The Ss watch a video and talk about it. Then the Ss
say whether they have any strange neighbors and if they have, they talk
about them.
Grouping: Whole class
Objectives:
- To motivate Ss for the lesson

- To attract their attention to the topic

- To arouse their interest

Steps:
• The teacher starts the lesson by showing a photo of Burhan Altıntop-
a character in a TV series called “Avrupa Yakası”- and then asks the
students whether they know that man. As almost all the students
know Burhan, it is possible to get the answer “yes” from them.
• The teacher shows his video with one of his neighbors. Then the T
asks “What kind of neighbor is Burhan? Is he friendly,
understanding, respectful or agreeable?”
• After getting the students’ answers, the T asks the Ss whether they
have any strange or interesting neighbors like Burhan.
• The T says “Think about that a person like Burhan is your neighbor.
He is always doing something that disturbs you. You want to say
that you are disturbed and ask him politely not to do these
disturbing things. What would you say him?”
• The T provides the Ss helping language for the next activity and
gives the structure of “would you mind doing…?”, “I would be
grateful if ...”, “could you/would you/can you ... ?”, “excuse
me/pardon me”…

WHILE-SPEAKING
Time: 10 min.
Materials: Role cards
Interaction: Ss/Ss
What students do: The Ss have some role cards and some situations.
They make up sentences by using the structures they have learnt
according to the situation.
Grouping: Pair work
Aims:
- To get the Ss involved in a conversation

- To encourage them to speak English

- To create a communicative atmosphere

- To get them to use the structure of “would you mind doing…?”, “I

would be grateful if ...”, “could you/would you/can you ... ?”, “excuse
me/pardon me”…
Steps:
• The T asks the students to work in pairs and explains the activity.
• One of the pairs is Burhan and the other one is his neighbor. The Ss
have role cards on which some situations are written. Burhan does
always something that disturbs his neighbor and the neighbor tries
to ask him politely not to do these disturbing things by using the
structures they have learnt.

they come to the stage and act it out.

morning at 5 a.m. and you wake up very early every morning
because of this rooster. You cannot bear with it anymore and you
want to explain this situation to Burhan politely. What would you say
to Burhan?

2. Your neighbor, Burhan, has barbecue parties every Sunday. Smoke

coming from the barbecue is really disturbing because your rooms
are getting full of bad smell. What would you say to Burhan in order
to show your disturbance politely?

3. Your neighbor, Burhan, gives a party with his friends on Wednesday

and they are making so much noise. Next morning you have to get
up early because of a business meeting but you cannot sleep
because of the noise. What would you say to Burhan tactfully?

4. Your neighbor, Burhan, is a drummer so he is playing the drums and

practicing loudly at nights. However, you are always tired at nights
so you want to take a rest and don’t want to hear any noise. What
would you say to Burhan nicely?

5. Your neighbor, Burhan, is a terrible gossip. Whenever he sees you in

the hall of the apartment, he keeps you busy by gossiping about the
other neighbors, which really bothers you. You don’t want to gossip
