point, on every kind of people, of every type of test [hearing, sight, musical talent, intelligence, etc.].)

(Chapter I: The Problem of Race Psychology, Chapter II: Mental Heredity, Chapter III: Early Studies in Racial Differences in Mental Traits, Chapter IV: Recent
Trends in Studies of Racial Psychology, Chapter V: Racial Differences in Intelligence, Chapter VI: Intelligence and Euthenics, Chapter VII: Racial Esthetics,

RACE, THE CONCEPT OF : CONTROVERSY

Morning, Ann. ""Everyone Knows It's a Social Construct": Contemporary Science and the Nature of Race."
Sociological Focus 40.4 (2007): pp. 436-454.
(This is the definitive article for any argument showing the widespread scientific confusion about "race" between anthros, socios, medical
doctors, biolos, geneticists, etc. She gives all the money quotes from academic association official declarations, etc. She interviews a bunch of
profs, to update Lieberman's work from the 1980s…phenomenal verbal gymnastics by these 'academics' to avoid saying what makes them
uncomfortable. Truly something to witness.)

"Sociological literature frequently claims that scientists across the disciplinary spectrum have arrived at the common conclusion that race is
socially constructed, not biologically anchored. I investigate contemporary scientific thinking about race by interviewing more than 40 biologists
and anthropologists at four northeastern universities. Contrary to sociologists' expectations, racial constructionism is revealed to be a minority
viewpoint. Moreover, this research shows that the usual "constructionist" versus "essentialist" dichotomy a blunt tool for characterizing the
debate about race…"

"…anthropologist Leonard Lieberman and his colleagues. In 1984-1985, they surveyed 725 professors of biology, anthropology, and
psychology, randomly selected from professional association directories (response rates ranged from 54-84% by subfield). When asked for their
opinion of the statement, 'There are biological races in the species Homo sapiens,' 74% of the biologists surveyed agreed with it, whereas 49% of
the physical anthropologists agreed and only 31% of the cultural anthropologists did (Lieberman 1997)."

"one embraces the ideas that are perceived, consciously or unconsciously, as legitimizing or favorably accounting for one's status. In support of
this hypothesis, Lieberman (1997) found that across disciplines, women were consistently more likely than their male colleagues to refute the
notion of biological races." (interesting!)

Davis, Bernard D., "Neo-Lysenkoism, IQ and the Press,"  The Public Interest, 74, 41-59.
<http://www.cpsimoes.net/artigos/art_davis.html>

(Davis, an eminent biologist, takes apart Stephen Jay Gould's "The Mismeasure of Man" with the precision of a surgeon and exposes it for the
propaganda that it is.)

Levin, Michael. Why Race Matters: Race Differences and What They Mean. Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers,
1997.

(good discussion on genes, alleles, etc., pretty accessible for non-specialists, lots of discussion on policy prescriptions, clear, readable style)

Parens, Erik. "Genetic Differences and Human Identities: On Why Talking about Behavioral Genetics Is
Important and Difficult." The Hastings Center Report 34.1 (2004): 1+.

(Long, detailed report from big scientific ('hard' and 'soft') working group in the early 2000s, an important effort towards giving tools to those
who want to have Holder's famous 'conversation on race.' Author is clearly a blank-slatist himself but reports the varied biological findings,
behavioral findings, philosophical debates, legal problems, genetic manipulation possibilities, etc. of his colleagues with objectivity. An
important base document for any serious, sober public debate about genetics & what policies should flow from it.)

RACE and MEDICINE

Garn, Stanley M. Human Races. Springfield, IL: Charles C Thomas, 1961.

(Talks a lot about disease prevalence, blood types, etc. in different ethnic groups, all over the world, very interesting.)

(Contents : I: The Nature of Race, II: Geographical, Local and Micro-Races Race, "Race" and Race, III: Race Differences, IV: Blood Groups
and Race, V: Natural Selection and Race, VI: Abnormal Hemoglobins, Malaria and Race, VII: Race and Disease, VIII: Race and Genetic Drift,

existent races.)

Mankind Quarterly 48.1 (2007): pp. 65-82.
(Quote: "The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT; Bracken & McCallum, 1998) is standardized, norm referenced measure
of intelligence that requires only universal hand gestures from the examiner and examinee. The UNIT was constructed in order to measure the
cognitive abilities of children who may be disadvantaged by more traditional intelligence tests, which typically emphasize receptive and
expressive language abilities. In the present study, standardization data from the UNIT is examined to identify group differences in performance.
Despite its novel nonverbal format and response demands, group differences are identified. Subsequent analysis confirms the substantial
influence of Spearman's g in explaining these observed group differences.")

(available online) <http://www.toqonline.com/archives/v5n4/54-Frank.pdf>

(Frank: "When Tacitus informs us that in Nero’s day a great many of Rome’s senators and knights were descendants of slaves and that the native
stock had dwindled to surprisingly small proportions, we are not sure whether we are not to take it as an exaggerated thrust by an indignant
Roman of the old stock.” Frank theorises, based on exhaustive research of thousands of sepulchral inscriptions, that the Romans of the late
Empire, by massive inflows of eastern slaves whom it became more and more common to free (leading to too-high levels of intermarriage),
more or less bred themselves out of existence.)

GENETICS and THE LAW

Friedland, Steven I., "The Criminal Law Implications of the Human Genome Project: Reimagining a
Genetically Oriented Criminal Justice System," Kentucky Law Journal 1997-1998;86(2):303-66.

(Quote from O. Jones: "Friedland considers and critiques ways in which a "genetically oriented criminal justice system" might differ from
current approaches in contexts of pre-trial release, character evidence at trial, post-trial release, sentencing, and parole.")

NATIONAL ETHNIC DIFFERENCES

Bond, Michael Harris, and Peter B. Smith. "Cross-Cultural Social and Organizational Psychology." Annual
Review of Psychology
(1996): 205+.
(Very long sum-up of recent studies on cross-cultural values, interpersonal (like attraction), also teamwork, leadership, etc., very interesting
because it names plenty of countries, East and West, extremely long bibliography.)

Bonger, Willem Adriaan. Race and Crime. (Trans. Margaret Mathews Hordyk) New York: Columbia University
Press, 1943.

(Has many tables comparing crime levels between Jews and non-Jews, between Nordics, Alpines, Mediterraneans, Baltics, as well as African-
Americans, from late 1800s / early 1900s. Fascinating.)

Clark, Gregory, A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, Princeton, Princeton University
Press, 2007.

("For a novel and somewhat dispiriting theory of economic divergence, read A Farewell to Alms, published this year, by Gregory Clark of the
University of California at Davis. He doesn't accept the view, common among the utopians, that natural endowments like soil and water explain
why rich nations are 50 times as prosperous as poor ones. How can differences in natural resources possibly explain Zimbabwe's misery or
Singapore's wealth? Clark amasses an extraordinary collection of historical data to explain why the Industrial Revolution was born in western
Europe, not Africa or India." -- William Baldwin, Forbes)
De Madariaga, Salvador. Englishmen, Frenchmen, Spaniards: An Essay in Comparative Psychology. London:
Oxford University Press, H. Milford, 1929.

(The pleasure of reading our forebears' frank, fearless speaking on ethnic character differences in the pre-thoughtcrime era is like
a cool drink of water on a hot summer day. A charming book, a lovely reminder of what we're so sorely missing today.)

Eibl-Eibesfeldt, Irenäus, and Frank Kemp Salter, eds. Indoctrinability, Ideology, and Warfare : Evolutionary
Perspectives. New York: Berghahn Books, 1998.

(Talks quite a bit about warfare, intra-group and inter-group, indoctrination, ethno-nationalism, 'the other' and 'me', in groups of both monkeys
and men.)

Hsu, Francis L. K., ed. Psychological Anthropology: Approaches to Culture and Personality. Homewood, IL:
Dorsey Press, 1961.

(Japan, North America, Africa, Oceania, and plenty more—Author is perhaps a bit of a blank slatist but a great number of old (pre-PC) race
studies are cited here.)

McDougall, William. Group Mind: A Sketch of the Principles of Collective Psychology, with Some Attempt to
Apply Them to the Interpretation of National Life and Character:. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1920.

(Talks about general group psychology, panics, also racial differences that lead to national characters.)

(McDougall: "We have found reason to believe that national character, as expressed in the collective mental life of any people, is only to be
understood and explained when we take into account the native or racial mental qualities of the people; and we have seen reason to think that
these racial qualities were in the main formed in the prehistoric or race-making period." p. 337)

HISTORY of AFRICANS IN THE U.S.

Bonger, Willem Adriaan. Race and Crime. (Trans. Margaret Mathews Hordyk.) New York: Columbia University
Press, 1943.

(Has many tables comparing violent crime between Jews and non-Jews, between Nordics, Alpines, Mediterraneans, Baltics, as well as African-
Americans, from late 1800s / early 1900s. Fascinating.)

Braun, Gedaliah, Racism, Guilt, and Self-Deceit, Johannesburg, Jan Lamprecht, 2007.

(Not history of American Africans, but interesting nonetheless. J. Taylor: "Fascinating observations of an American who has lived in Africa for
nearly 30 years. He systematically started asking Africans—even virtual strangers—what they thought about racial differences and whether they
were in favor of black rule. Unlike most whites, who would be ashamed to ask such questions, Dr. Braun is utterly uninhibited. Dr. Braun puts it
this way: '(1) Blacks cannot manage a modern industrial democratic society; (2) blacks know this and would never think of denying it were it
not for white liberals insisting otherwise; (3) except for those black elites who hope to take power, black rule is in no one’s interest, especially
not blacks; (4) blacks know this better than anyone and are terrified of black rule.'")

Burgess, John W. Reconstruction and the Constitution, 1866-1876. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1902.

Chapter III: President Johnson's Plan of Reconstruction And His Proceedings in Realization of It, Chapter IX: The Attempt to Remove the
President, Chapter XI: President Grant and Reconstruction, Chapter XII: "A Carpet-Bag" and Negro Domination in The Southern States

1918. (entirely available online)
<http://www.archive.org/stream/truthaboutlynchi00colluoft#page/n1/mode/2up>
(Don't let the extremely provocative title scare you off. When you get past the 'defending lynching' part, there is a veritable wealth of historical
documentation in the book on Africans in the U.S., re: health, housing, education, employment, wealth level, religion, crime, demographic
trends, etc., most of it drawn from public records of the time. Essential resource for the subject of "Africans in the U.S., history.")

DuBois, W. E.B. The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1899.

Moton, Robert Russa. What the Negro Thinks. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc., 1929.

(Moton succeeded Booker T. Washington as head of the Tuskegee Institute. Excellent snapshot of African life in the U.S. in the 1920s.
Chapters on housing, education, suffrage, the law, and various discriminations suffered.)

Murphey, Dwight D., Lynching: History and Analysis , Washington, D.C.: Journal of Social and Economic Studies
Legal-Studies Monograph, 1995. <http://www.dwightmurphey-collectedwritings.info/mono/mono1.htm>

(Very recent monograph on the question, by law professor Dwight Murphey. This is not just a history of African-American lynching, but of the
practice in general, one which many forget was practiced in many times and places, on people of all races. A thoughtful, well-sourced analysis.)

Page, Thomas Nelson. The Negro: The Southerner's Problem. New York: C. Scribner's Sons, 1904.

(1904 work by a Southerner who is very nostalgic for the antebellum era, and it shows on every page. But if this dripping emotional attachment
doesn't put you off, there is some decent info. here on the condition of Africans in the antebellum South, particularly the large number of skilled
artisan slaves who worked in the trades, subject he spends a lot of time on.)

Redding, J. Saunders. On Being Negro in America. Indianapolis: Charter Books, 1962.

(Unusual book by an unusual man. Saunders, man of letters, first African-American Chair at Cornell University, writes the narrative of his life
—growing up, attending college, raising two boys—in the pre-Civil Rights Act American North. Cynical, biting, heartbreaking. His telling, in
Chapter 12, the story of the first time his naïve eight-year-old son experiences racism will puncture any but the hardest of hearts. Afro-, Euro-,
Hispanic, whomever you are, if you're American, don't miss this. It's your history. Available on Questia.)

Reuter, Edward Byron. The American Race Problem: A Study of the Negro. Ed. Seba Eldridge. New York:
Thomas Y. Crowell, 1927.
(Great sociologist of his day, his doctoral dissertation 'The Mulatto in the United States' won him highest honors at the U. of Chicago in 1919.
Serious, well-sourced study, with chapters on health, employment, family life, discrimination and assimilation, delinquency, religion, culture.
Very thorough treatment of the lynching question (with detailed statistics) in Chap. XV, 'Crimes Against the Negro.'  Highly recommended.)

Richburg, Keith B. Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa. 1st ed. New York: Basic Books, 1997.

(Not American history exactly, but compelling reading. Journalist in Africa during the 1990s, came to some conclusions about its peoples that
really upset most of the African-American community. Brutally honest. Highly recommended.)

1901. (entirely available online) < http://www.archive.org/stream/americannegrowha00thom#page/n7/mode/2up>

(Dubbed the 'Black Judas' in by African-American leaders of his time, this Mulatto lawyer and theologian has written one of the most incendiary
books on the question of the 'Negro in America.' Reviled and denounced by many, it is a brutal and unsparing condemnation of what he took to
be the very worst traits in America's Africans in his time. Such visceral disgust I have scarcely seen from the pen of the most virulent Euro-
American separatist. There is truth here, but it is dressed in some very harsh language. Proceed with caution.)
