Advantages and disadvantages in Environmental issue in agriculture

Environmental impact. Construction activities can harm the environment by causing noise and
pollution. Huge mass oI water collected in one place may cause some weight disturbance to the
earth which is not proven but there is a theory going around.

Coal
Advantages
O Coal can be Iound in lots oI places in the world and there is still plenty in the UK.
O Coal can be easily transported to the power stations.
O Coal is a relatively cheap energy source.

Disadvantages
O To dig up coal, we have to create mines which can be dangerous and not very nice to
look at.
O Transporting coal by lorry and train Irom the mine to the power station causes pollution.
O Burning coal produces polluting gases like sulIur dioxide which make acid rain.
O OI all energy sources, burning coal releases the most greenhouse gases which may add to
global warming.
O Coal is a non-renewable source and will run out in about 100 years.
O Coal miners can be aIIected by black lung disease or pneumoconiosis and also
emphysema iI they breathe in too much oI the coal dust.

2 l and Natural Gas
Advantages
O Oil and natural gas are Iound in lots oI places in the world.
O We can transport oil and gas in pipes and by using tankers or ships.

Disadvantages
O Environmental damage can be caused when building the rig and by accidental oil
spillages.
O Oil and gas are not renewable, so once the supplies are used, they will run out.
O Burning these Iuels releases greenhouse gases into the air. This may add to global
warming.
O The price oI oil and gas will increase because supplies are running out and lots oI people
will want it
O Working on an oil or gas rig can be dangerous due to the risk oI explosions and bad
weather.

3 Nuclear
Advantages
O Nuclear Iuel does not make harmIul greenhouse gases.
O You only need a very small amount oI nuclear Iuel to make a lot oI energy

Disadvantages
O The waste that is produced when using nuclear Iuel is radioactive and very harmIul. It
needs to be disposed oI careIully
O Nuclear power stations are at risk Irom terrorist attack and sabotage.
O World uranium supplies may run out in about 50 years.

4 Wnd
Advantages
O Wind is Iree and will not run out so the cost is in building the wind turbine.
O Wind power generation does not create greenhouse gases
O There are very Iew saIety risks with wind turbines.

Disadvantages
O We can only use windmills in areas where there is a lot oI wind. Sometimes there may
be days where there is little wind.
O We need a lot oI turbines to make a lot oI electricity.
O Some people don`t like the way wind turbines look, they think they spoil the countryside.

5 Wave
Advantages
O Waves are Iree and will not run out so the cost is in building the power station.
O Wave power does not produce greenhouse gases.
O There are very Iew saIety risks with wave power generation.

Disadvantages
O Waves can be big or small so you may not always be able to generate electricity.
O You need to Iind a way oI transporting the electricity Irom the sea onto the land.
O Not many people have tried to generate electricity this way yet so the equipment is
expensive.

6 Tdal
Advantages
O Tides are Iree once the power station has been built and will not run out.
O No greenhouse gases are produced when we make the electricity.
O We know exactly when the tides happen so we know when electricity will be made.

Disadvantages
O You may need to build a large wall called a dam to make the water Ilow through the
generators. This may not be good Ior plants and animals that live nearby.
O The tides only happen twice a day, so can only produce electricity Ior that time.

7 Geothermal
Advantages
O Geothermal energy does not produce greenhouse gases
O The energy source is Iree and will not run out

Disadvantages
O There are not many places where we can build geothermal power stations
O HarmIul gases and minerals may occasionally come up Irom the ground below. These
can be diIIicult to control.

8 Solar
Advantages
O The energy Irom the Sun is Iree.
O The sun does not produce greenhouse gases.
O The sun will always be there during our liIetime.

Disadvantages
O It is relatively expensive to build solar power stations.
O When it is cloudy or at night there is not enough light so no electricity can be made.
O Some people don`t like the look oI solar panels.

9 omass
Advantages
O The Iuel is cheap and can use things that we might otherwise throw away.
O We can Iind waste everywhere and should not run out.

Disadvantages
O When the Iuel is burned greenhouse gases are made which pollute the environment.
O Sometimes people grow biomass crops where we could grow Iood.
O We may not have enough space to grow enough biomass Iuel.

dro-electrc
Advantages
O When the electricity is generated, no greenhouse gases are made.
O The water used is Iree.
O It is a renewable energy source.

Disadvantages
O The dam is expensive to build.
O By building a dam, the nearby area has to be Ilooded and this could aIIect nearby wildliIe
and plants.
O II it does not rain much we may not have enough water to turn the turbines.
