GREATER ROSELAND SAFETY NET WORKS COALITION

Winter Newsletter 2011
Greetings, Greater Roseland Safety Net Works Coalition Partners, Members, and CPS Staff!!! We hope that you are gearing up to enjoy the holiday season. As we all know, the holidays bring about a time of joy and excitement. However, this season also leaves a lot of down time for our youth. As we have been coming together once a month these are the exact issues that we are trying to address. We strive together as one community to come up with solutions to attempt to prevent our children, our future from falling through the cracks. We solely are about the preservation of life so that children can see their futures and walk in their destinies. We are all aware of the escalation of violence that has been occurring in the last couple of weeks. This culminated in a Prayer Vigil on December 9, 2011 led by Roseland Cease Fire with partners such as CAPS (5th and 22nd Districts). This could leave us all with the question; how do we keep our neighborhoods safe? Please know that we are answering this question by simply coming together to dialogue and share. We are the answer to the concerns that we have for our community. At the last coalition meeting, we had discussed coming up with a list of activities that our children could participate in during their winter break from

school. Thank you so much to the organizations within the coalition that are hosting an event on their own accord to provide a place for community youth to go. Our combined efforts are making a difference as we strive to build trust, strengthen our relationship, and engage each other. We remain committed to this mission together. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" Margaret Mead. This quote is true because a small group of people has always been the spark that has changed the world, society, or a community. As we move forward together, we will have a strong impact, lives will be saved, and futures will be realized. We will create a net of not only safety, but inspiration that will last well beyond this moment. Thank you so much for your commitment and dedication to this work. I look forward to seeing you at our next coalition meeting on December 20th, 2011 at 11:00am at Successful Living Community Center (35 W. 119th Street). We are participating in a joint meeting with Region 6 (Southside Help Center) as they work on a plan to address educational and youth employment disparities within the Region 6 community that meeting will begin at 10:00 am.
