Cathie and Cliff Gibson

Except for three years with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Cliff worked as an electrical engineer and manager for Stromberg Carlson/Siemens Corporation in Lake Mary, Florida for 32 years until the company shut down. They then moved to Elizabethton, TN. Although they loved the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, they found the winters too cold and gloomy, so hailed farewell and came to Sun City Festival in 2008. Now they live near two of their sons and a married grand-daughter in Surprise and Glendale. Cathie and Cliff love being a part of our great active adult community. Both are active as Neighborhood Watch Captains and Resident Ambassadors. Cliff is very active with the Woodcrafters Club. Cathie has rediscovered her old love of painting and enjoys being in the Fine Arts Club. She also enjoys water aerobics. Cliff, Cathie, and their little Sheltie, DariQueen, love being full time residents here and enjoy their old friends and making new ones.

Cathie and Cliff Gibson moved to Sun City Festival from Elizabethton, Tennessee, four years ago. Both grew up together in McCook, Nebraska, graduating from High School in 1961, at which time their paths parted for over 30 years. Cathie married and raised four sons in Colorado, and enjoyed being a hairstylist and salon owner for 35 years. Cliff married after serving four years in the Navy in Sanford, Florida and raised three children. In 1993, Cliff and Cathies paths crossed again. They married and lived in Orange City, Florida for the next ten years.

Not The Same Old Sunscreen

Your favorite sunscreen may be changing. Due to new regulations, some sunscreens may undergo reformulation and/or new labeling and packaging. To get the best protection from the suns harsh rays, reading the sunscreen label is more important than ever. The two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays, UVA and UVB, are considered the broad spectrum from which sunscreen protects our skin. UVA by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness & Wellness Director rays cause skin wrinkles and discoloration while UVB rays cause sunburn. And both UVA and UVB are skin cancer contributors. SPF measures only the UVB protection. New guidelines require the term broad spectrum protection to block 90% of UVA rays AND have a minimum of SPF 15. These new guidelines also apply to cosmetics. Warnings may appear and protection claims may disappear on some types of products. New rules also apply to other products claiming sun protection. Towelettes, shampoos, body washes and other items can no longer be considered sunscreens. This is to ensure a typical user will apply enough product to get the stated protection. Waterproof and sweatproof claims are no longer permitted. Since all sunscreens must be reapplied every two hours, the waterproof claims have given consumers a false sense of security. Now, a sunscreen label must say water-resistant for 40 minutes. We are learning about a new kind of danger from the sun infrared rays. In addition to the sun, infrared rays come from ovens, light bulbs and hair dryers. Like UV, infrared rays are divided into different types, IFA, IFB, and IFC. IFA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UV rays. While they do not generate heat, IFA rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage skin cells by creating free radicals. This damage can cause inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, increased pigment production, and can even harm mitochondria. Infrared rays may be linked to a red blotchy rash which looks like brown and red patches on the skin. Sunscreens do not provide protection from infrared rays. Topical antioxidants are the only products which may provide protection. Sunscreen formulas, labels and protection are changing. Be sure to check the label on your favorite brand to make sure you are adequately protected.
