I can hardly believe another month has passed, for me a pretty significant month really. August 17 marked one year since I left the states to begin this journey, and just continued on back page

Snapshot

Photo above, Shirley Ann Turner and a Zambian school child: On our outing to the Lake Kariba Dam, we met a few groups of school children on a field trip. We greeted them and asked them what school they were from, having a short polite conversation. As we walked across the top of the dam, one of the children worked up enough courage to approach one of the ten people in our group, I am asking, can I take a picture with you? And so it started, for the next half hour or so various different ones from the field trip would come up to various ones from our group and ask if we would take a picture with them. I am still not sure exactly what the excitement is. The picture is taken with our camera, and they dont even want a copy. They each just asked to look at it before walking away. For some reason though, they smiled and enjoyed the experience. This is just a glimpse of the friendly, sociable type of people Zambians are overall. This really is a beautiful place to live with very nice, helpful people to share life with.

Some organizations put out cans in grocery stores, some raise funds by selling magazines, but the Glasgow and Scobey Assemblies of God decided to sell yummy Butter Braids to raise funds for missions training and missions trips. The group has been active in Glasgow and Scobey, speaking at events and in both towns as well as at a conference in Douglas, Wyoming in 2011. They have sent a member out to missions in Mexico in 2011 and 2012 and hopes to be able to send out more in the future. The team has members from Glasgow, Saint Marie, Opheim and Scobey and meets twice a month for discipleship and training in theology. The major aim of the group is to reach out locally and where ever they are sent in order to share Jesus with others. This is one fund-raiser that helps all who are involved. Not only does it help to send people out to help others around the world, but it also provides those who purchase the Butter Braids with a yummy treat to serve at upcoming holiday dinners and maybe even just for the fun of it. If you are interested in ordering, please call Doug or Chris Hollenbeck (in Glasgow) at 228-2042, Carmen Hubbs (in St. Marie) 230-0908 and Karen Pearce (in Opheim and Scobey) 942-0872. Orders are being taken until September 26th and will be delivered on or about September 30th and they sell for $14 each. Not bad for a yummy, tasty dessert. Thank you, and God Bless!

September 28, 2013 many of us here in Kabwe will be joining multitudes of other people to RUN FOR THE WORLD. Our focus will be to run for 250 communities in Zambia. Our first step is to provide soccer balls to each of the communities. We can then come alongside individuals in the community who are willing and able to start sports clubs in the communities. Our sports ministry team will then partner with these coaches to help them establish teams for kids that can help them have a safe environment to learn, grow, and develop some new skills. I will be running the 5k (my very first) at 10:00 a.m. on September 28th. If you would like to join me in the fun, you can learn more about R4TW by going to the website, http://www.r4tw. org/. You can run where you are, find a group near you who are running, or sponsor someone (me!) who is running. If you would like to help us in our goal of transforming 250 communities, one soccer ball purchased for Zambians in Zambia with a donation of $30 USD will help change a community. Beautiful as an American Bald Eagle, these birds are the national bird of Zambia. The locals say that the African Fish Eagles are always seen in pairs. If something happens to one of them, the other one will fly straight up into the air, just like a Romeo and Juliet story. They are completely faithful to a lifelong partner. Not sure that the habits of this bird speak to relationships in Zambia, but it definitely resembles the sense of community felt and lived here.
