When you think about wine, you naturally think about cheese. Its like peanut butter and jelly or maybe even Laurel and Hardy, you dont usually think about one without the other. When something goes together perfectly, its hard to tear them apart. The folks at B.R. Cohn have created the ultimate Wine & Cheese Trail Pairing that takes place at the winery every Friday through Monday at 1 p.m., and not just for the summer months, but all year long. We select the finest cheeses from Sonoma, Marin and Napa counties, said wine educator Chris Schuur who directs the program for the winery and is easily considered the main cheese head. We use nothing but local cheeses and seek out the smallproduction artisans creating the most flavorful products to pair with our wines. Our Cheese Trail program gives our guests a sense of the agricultural aspects of our area. The wine and cheese tasting takes place in the original milking barn on the B.R. Cohn property, where owner Bruce Cohn grew up. The cheese selections as well as the wine selections change often with each pairing consisting of four wines and four cheeses. The Cheese Trail tasting fee is $20 for wine club members and $25 for the general public. You can call 1-800-330-4064 extension 124 to make a reservation during your next visit to wine country. We have traveled the countryside seeking out excellent cheeses that will pair well with our wines, said Schuur, Some of our vendors include Vella Cheese from downtown Sonoma and Point Reyes from Marin County. The program is a natural extension of our gourmet shop that includes a variety of olive oils, vinegars, mustards and the like. There are some 12 different varieties of award-winning olive oils, 12 different vinegars, plus herb, seafood and steak rubs, three different mustards as well as three olive tapenades. Additionally, the gourmet shop also features dessert sauces including a Chardonnay caramel sauce and a chocolate Cabernet wine sauce as well as chocolate raspberry Cabernet fudge. There is a little something for everyone in the gourmet shop. And, lets not forget the wines. The list of award-winning vintages includes three Estate wines, 2009 Zinfandel Olive Hill Estate, 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Olive Hill Estate and 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Edition. Also on the tasting list are the 2009 Pinot Noir Russian River, 2009 Zinfandel Sonoma Valley, 2009 Primitivo Sonoma Valley, 2009 Barbera Mendocino County, SyrCab Sonoma Valley blend, 2009 Cabernet Franc Sonoma Valley, SyrZin Sonoma Valley blend, Merlot Sonoma Valley, 2009 Malbec Sonoma Valley, 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, 2008 North Coast Petite Sirah and 2008 Sonoma Valley Syrah. The white wine tastings include the 2011 San Luis Obispo County Ros, 2011 Sonoma Valley Pinot Gris and the 2010 Carneros Chardonnay. Additionally there are two dessert wines, the 2008 Cabernet Port Olive Hill Estate and the 2008 Late Harvest Semillon, plus a host of library selections, large format bottles and numerous verticals from which to choose. We are in the epicenter of a cheese renaissance, Schuur continues, yet why spend all day driving from dairy to dairy on the Cheese Trail? Come to B.R. Cohn winery and relax while we showcase revolving selections of the most exquisite cheeses from the Sonoma-Marin Cheese Trail, seasonally appropriate, paired with elegant and awardwinning wines in our Glen Ellen Hamlet. When you are traveling in the Sonoma Valley and you are looking for ultra premium wines, extra virgin olive oils, handcrafted vinegars and gourmet food products, pull in to B.R. Cohn and enjoy your visit on a historic property filled with grape vines and olive trees. And, if you happen to arrive over a weekend, check out the Wine & Cheese Trail Pairing. Taste some of the best wines and best cheeses in all of wine country.

More Than 25 Russian River Valley Wineries to Pour Single Vineyard Wines in San Francisco
The Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association and Uncorked Events are bringing wine country to the city on Thursday, July 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. More than 25 winemakers and winegrowers will be pouring small-lot, single-vineyard wines at San Francisco-hotspot Sloane Square(d), alongside other Russian River Valley wines and accompanied by small bites of food from local producers and restaurants. The grapes that go into single vineyard wines are all specially selected to showcase the character of one particular vineyard, making this one-of-a-kind tasting a rare chance to try some of the most distinctive wines being made in the Russian River Valley. Winemakers and growers will be there to pour and answer questions, and DJ Sol will be spinning grooves all night. Unique silent auction items will also be on display to benefit the Russian River Valley Winegrowers and their work to preserve the regions agriculture legacy through marketing and education. Sloane Square(d) is located at 1525 Mission Street, San Francisco. Early bird admission is $40 per person. Limited VIP passes are also available at an early bird rate of $55 and allow early entry at 6 p.m. and access to a special library or reserve wine from each winery. Must be 21 or older to attend. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit singlevineyard.eventbrite.com.

STERLING VINEYARDS
Take a Sky Tram to Good Times!
BY JOSH STEIN
STERLING VINEYARDS Open Monday-Friday 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1111 Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga, CA 94515 (707) 942-3344 | www.sterlingvineyards.com
Few wineries anywhere directly control more than 1,200 acres of estate vineyards, and fewer still can lay claim to acreage from across the complete range of Napa Valley sub-appellations: mountainsides, various spots on the Valley floor, Carneros and Calistoga. And only one can lay claim to a green sky tram which takes you 300 feet above the Valley, giving unique views and striking architecture with which to enjoy the wines: Sterling Vineyards. Theyre proof that great things in the wine business truly do get better as they age! A legacy of five decades of stewardship continues today as the winery was one of the first twelve to be certified as a Napa County Green Winery by the Napa Valley Vintners; Sterling has also received Napa Valley Green Land certification for its sustainable management, water conservation and fish-friendly farming across all of its estate vineyards. Even the tram is solar-powered! This commitment to doing things the right way naturally extends to the winemaking after the grapes are grown. clusters to preserve quality. Reds are brought to the crush pad in small boxes and are hand-sorted before being destemmed and innoculated with native yeasts. Reserve wines are given even more special treatment in the micro-winery-withinthe-winery built in 2008. This 10,000-case facility across from the caves allows for wholeberry fermentations, barrel spinning for micro-fermentations and multiple small lots for best-of-the-best bottlings. That commitment to ensuring a legacy of quality is present in every release, and given the variety of vineyards and locations under its direct control a true rare luxury for the winemakers in todays modern global marketplace its not a surprise to find wines to appeal to all tastes and lifestyles. Indeed, there are the Napa Valley wines for which the winery is well known; the SingleVineyard releases, which highlight the unique combination of variety and place within various parts of the Valley; the Cellar Club wines, small bottlings of club-only exclusives; the Vintners Collection, which shows off other Sterling Vineyards in California; and the Reserve wines, individual, special and rarely bottled. All are available to taste at the winery, and many can only be found there altogether. Beyond the tram and the wines, there is plenty more to enjoy while on the property. The layout of the Greek island Mykonos-inspired white stucco walls allows for wandering amidst famous artworks and prints, architectural details
and, every once in a while, a random turn reveals breath-taking views of the Valleys narrowing northern quadrant, with the Mayacamas and Vacas in extreme proximity on both sides. Every quarter-hour, eight bells recovered from Londons bombed out Church of St.Dunstans-in-the-East accompany your movement around the winerys facilities. Self-paced by design by utilizing motion-activated flatscreens, the general admission tasting and tour covers the tram ride, the tour, tasting of five wines and a souvenir wine glass. For those wanting exclusive wines, there are also the Reserve, Sterling Silver VIP and Sterling Gold VIP options, which will taste you through reserve wines, single-vineyard, limitedrelease and premier bottlings available nowhere else. The goal is for visitors to be comfortable and able to enjoy everything the winery produces. Half a century ago, Sterling Vineyards was founded with the ideal of growing grapes in the best locations the Napa Valley had to offer and then producing the best possible wines to showcase those vineyards in an awe-inspiring setting. Lots of folks have come and gone in that time, and the winery is still here, doing what it does best: making wines that speak strongly of their sources. Come find out for yourself what more than a quarter million others annually do therere great wines still to be had after all these years up in Calistoga at Sterling Vineyards. Go and enjoy you wont be sorry!

JACK STORMS
Master of Cold Glass Sculpture Meet the Artist at RASgalleries
BY RONDA SCHAER
Welcome to
Top: Artist Jack Storms 'in studio' completing Bella Vino Middle: Bella Vino & Bella Duo Right: Cube
RASGALLERIES ART GLASS Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, Tuesdays by appointment. 6540 Washington Street, Yountville, Napa Valley (next to Bouchon) (707) 944-9211 | www.rasgalleries.com.
As the owner of RASgalleries, Ive had the opportunity to meet hundreds of talented American glass artists over the past twenty-two years. Im fascinated by the work of Jack Storms, one of only three cold glass sculptors in the world. Its a pleasure to announce that RASgalleries will host Jack Storms: Master of Cold Glass Sculpture beginning July 13 and continuing through August 31. In this show, well present Bella Vino, exclusive winethemed sculptures as well as pieces from his Cube & Ariel Series. The show begins Friday, July 13, with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m., and theres a second chance to meet Jack Storms on Saturday, July 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. I recently had the chance to chat with him about his life and work and his plans for the RASgalleries show. RASgalleries: Your sculptures radiate and mesmerize. Our clients cant take their eyes off them! The spectrum of color makes everyone want to touch the surface of the crystal. Talk about the first time you touched glass. What drew you to this medium? Jack Storms: That was a seminal moment for me and it was just that quick. Sculpting glass is a slow, tedious process but that first day when I stood at the grinding wheel manipulating the glass and saw what I could do, I was immediately hooked by both the process and the form. That first day, with the simple and tedious task of grinding a piece of glass flat and then smooth and then to a polish, I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It was magic to me to transform a piece of glass that looked like a chunk of concrete into a treasure that shone like a diamond. RASgalleries: You opened your studio in 2004 and youre one of very few optic crystal sculptors in the world. Youve said that it can take ten weeks or more to complete a piece. I understand the process is demanding, requiring painstaking construction of a core of dichroic film on glass. Each piece is cut, polished and laminated, layer after layer to achieve the geometric rainbows. Your studio must be an interesting place, describe it and the preparations you must make prior to beginning a new piece, and explain the steps you take to ensure success. What can go wrong? Jack Storms: It can all go wrong. Thats one of the main reasons the process takes the time that it does. Theres a lot of room for error and its a constant struggle to maintain a polished surface thats vital for the interior construction of the work and the finish. The studio looks like a dungeon since most of the tooling is wet and I use diamond tools and grit (basically the texture of beach sand). Its a constant struggle to not cross contaminate. The process is slow enough without making a mistake like mixing up a polishing compound with grit. I bond the glass in a clean room that must be dust free. Again, I have to be constantly aware of contamination since no one wants my eyelashes in their artwork. RASgalleries: You draw inspiration from both your heart and science, using the theory of Fibonacci in each lead crystal sculpture. Fibonacci, as a great mathematician, articulated that math is natural in nature. Fibonacci numbers are
38
found in the patterns of growth in every living thing. Can you explain how this is interpreted in your work? Jack Storms: Utilizing the Fibonacci theory, my work has the ability to be visually spectacular at one angle and then show the simplicity of form, pattern and structure at another. The principle is also responsible for being a bridge from a very technical medium to a more natural reception, giving the sense that the work is created and not manufactured. RASgalleries: Talk about the beverage-themed sculptures that you will feature for Bella Vino, the RASGalleries show in July. What excites you about this new series? How are these forms different for you? Jack Storms: The wine-themed work is what I call my Bella work. These works are very dear to me because they come from a concept that I was told multiple times would never work. I was convinced I could shape glass on a lathe so I designed then created a lathe that would prove the doubters wrong. The first works from this lathe were wine-themed. It seemed very natural to me. There are so many exciting forms that I can explore with the lathe and the shapes and colors in the finished pieces that will be at the show bottles, wine glasses, Champagne flutes emphasize the energy between the love of wine and art. Each of the ten new pieces refracts light, reflects and casts colored shadow. RASgalleries: There are two new rainbows in your life: your wife, Vivian, and your son, Owen. Give our readers a slice of your life outside the studio. What do you love to do with your family? Jack Storms: Before I met my wife and created our family, I thought my true love was my work. I used to live to sculpt not sculpt to live. I was made to be a dad and husband and Im lucky enough to support them doing something I thoroughly enjoy. That realization has made me a better sculptor. I take my love for them and their love for me and channel it into the work. That energy makes the creative process flow from me without resistance. When the day is done, I race home to wrestle with my two-year-old and coach him on the ABCs, and be a husband to my wife. It recharges me for the next day of sculpting in the studio. RASgalleries: What would you like people to take away, emotionally, from this show? Jack Storms: I hope that they find my work brings a sense of fascination and wonder that is enduring for them through the years. Jack Storms is a driving force in the world of cold glass sculpture. Collected internationally, his work has also been commissioned for award ceremonies, as commemorative pieces, and even as a gift honoring the President of Nigeria. At RASgalleries, we are pleased to represent this accomplished artist year-round. We invite you to Jack Storms: Master of Cold Glass introducing Bella Vino, a highly anticipated show of sculpture by Jack Storms, opening on July 13 with new works continuing to arrive through August 31, 2012. Attend the artist reception July 13 from 6 to 8 p.m and July 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at RASgalleries in Yountville.

WILSON WINERY
BY SUE STRAIGHT, THE WINE WENCH
WILSON WINERY
1960 Dry Creek Road, just north of the wine-infused Mecca of Healdsburg Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (707) 433-4355 | www.wilsonwinery.com. Tell them the Wine Wench sent you!
Great wines, friendly staff, unpretentious atmosphere and stunning views of the Dry Creek Valley Wilson Winery is all this and much more. When Ken and Diane Wilson started restoring the old corrugated tin barn (once known as the Chris Fredson Winery) in 1993, they had no idea of the adventure they were embarking on. When they started the project, there were still old redwood tanks and vats in the cellar. Now, almost 20 years later, they have produced dozens of award-winning wines, garnered lots of critical acclaim and most importantly, made lots of friends and fans. Wilson Winery is the first winery in their growing family of Wilson Artisan Wineries, which includes Mazzocco, Soda Rock, Matrix, Jaxon Keys, deLorimier and most recently, Pezzi King. Owner/Winemaker Diane Wilson crafts big juicy, jammy, tail-waggin good Zinfandels (and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petite Sirah, too) that are way too easy to drink! If you are already a Zinfandel fan, you must go there and taste a few. If you are not a Zinfandel fan, you must go there and taste a few those wines just might make a believer out of you! Im not the only fan Wilson Winerys wines recently won 25 medals (including three double gold medals and six gold medals) at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition! The winery is surrounded by lush, green lawn, which is partially shaded by tall oak trees. There have been occasional sightings of pink plastic patio flamingos on the lawn (the Wilson family definitely has a sense of humor), but there is nothing kitschy about this place, folks! A handful of wrought iron picnic tables are artfully placed about the shaded patio, inviting visitors to stay a while and enjoy the gorgeous, sweeping views of the surrounding Dry Creek Valley. The tasting room is comfortable and well laid out, with the main bar spanning the back of the room and another bar off to the side for VIP tastings and large groups. Large windows let in lots of light and watercolors by a local artist dot the walls, creating a bright, airy atmosphere. The overall vibe in the tasting room is casual and welcoming. A tasteful selection of non-wine gift items is artfully laid out for the discerning shopper, including some dog-related gifts (Wilson Winery is dog friendly). A refrigerator is stocked with cheeses, cold cuts, bottled water and chilled wines, making it easy for visitors to create an impromptu picnic. Wilson Winery has the well-earned reputation for being a fun place to visit. The tasting room staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they genuinely enjoy chatting with visitors. They also feature live music performed by local bands on a regular basis (my band has played there several times and I can tell you firsthand that these events are really fun!). I tasted a few wines during my visit. The following were my favorites: 2009 Mollys Zinfandel ($34) This is Zinfandel with a capital Z! Mouthwatering aromas of blackberry, plum, black pepper and brambles lead into a juicy mouthful of consistent flavors, which linger through the finish. Yum! 2009 Wilson Family Red ($34) This is a big-bodied, delicious, red blend, loaded with aromas and flavors of plum, blueberry, blackberry and peppery spice. Wilson Winery is a must-stop on your next visit to Sonoma County!

TOM MEADOWCROFT
My passion for wines comes from my experiences growing up, working and traveling in Europe and the United States, says Tom Meadowcroft, winemaker and owner of Sonomas Meadowcroft Wines. I started my journey in winemaking by working the harvest of 1979 in Bordeaux, France. His passion for wine continued as he worked at wineries in both Washington and the Napa Valley. He took numerous extension courses from U.C. Davis and graduated from Napa College with an Associate of Science degree in Winery Technology and Viticulture. He became a vineyard manager focused on sustainable farming and environmental advocacy. Managing dozens of vineyards for many of the top wineries in Napa and Sonoma taught me the principles of winegrowing and gave me a vision for the kinds of wines that I make today, says Meadowcroft. Over the years he has gotten a well-earned reputation for the quality of the wine he creates and a passion for the environment, two things he considers inseparable today, and for an ongoing stewardship for the land that nurtures the grapes. The way I look at it, what I do is not just about the landscape and the wine; it is just as much about sustainability. He adds, The fruit that comes from our own vineyards as well as those from which we source, all use sustainable practices. The standard bearer of the Meadowcroft label is the Mt. Veeder Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon. An award-winning wine since its first vintage in 2005 which received 94 points in Wine Enthusiast, the current 2008 release stands shoulder to shoulder with its predecessors and just recently garnered a 91 rating from the magazine. The Meadowcroft label also produces Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Viognier and Pinot Noir. In addition to the flagship Meadowcroft label, Tom has also created Thomas Henry Wines named for his father, Thomas Henry Meadowcroft, and crafted for daily enjoyment and for sharing with friends and family. My dad always looked for great wines at a good price, says Meadowcroft, We lived and traveled throughout Europe together by car, foot and on bicycle, sharing the lessons of life, family and friends and that philosophy remains with every bottle of Thomas Henry we produce. The Thomas Henry label features Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Meritage, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to the Meadowcroft and Thomas Henry brands, Tom also makes the wines for the Foyt Family. With each varietal, a memory in motor sports from the Foyt familys rich history, which extends over some five decades, is shared. But the name Foyt is more than just a celebrity name on a bottle. Foyt Family Wines was created by Larry Foyt and A.J. Foyt IV, the son and grandson, respectively, of world renown racing legend A. J. Foyt. Their venture began with their passion for fine wine, and as a way of creating a tribute to A.J. as well. The Foyt Family label presently includes a Chardonnay, a Meritage and a Cabernet with additional vintages planned for the future. Our style of winemaking for all of our labels is all about balance, says Meadowcroft. Not too much oak, because I never want to mask the varietal characteristics that are so essential. To see for yourself, take a trip to the tasting room located at Cornerstone Sonoma, only five miles south of the town of Sonoma, 40 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge and just across the street from Gloria Ferrer.

Tasting will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by the street dance and no host bar from 8 to 10 p.m. Event-goers can sip premium Lake County wines from as many as 20 participating wineries and sample tasty bites of local food. To keep the fun going, live music will play throughout the evening featuring the Rodeo Polecats during the tasting portion of the event and the Jimmy Z Band during the street dance. Tickets for the event are $30 ($15 food only) in advance and may be purchased at the Lake County Chamber of Commerce. Tickets also may be purchased the day of the event for $35 ($15 food only). Ticket purchase includes a wine glass and a map showing all participating wineries and restaurants. Presented by the Lakeport Main Street Association (LMSA), A Taste of Lakeport is a benefit for the revitalization of downtown Lakeport. For further information, contact LMSA at (707) 243-8843, or visit www.lakeportmainstreet.com. One of Californias hottest new wine destinations, Lake County is just two hours by car from the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento Valley and Pacific Coast. Lake County is home to Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in California and one of the oldest lakes on the continent, and Mount Konocti, an ancient volcano that recently opened to offer one of the newest day hikes in the state. Visit Lake County to enjoy the states cleanest air, spectacular scenic beauty and unsurpassed recreation hiking, biking, wine tasting, paddling, fishing, birding, golfing, off-road adventures and even rockhounding.

This year, Concannon is reflecting on having grown this heritage variety for 100 years
Jim Concannon had the foresight to varietally label Petite Sirah in 1964, with a 1961 vintage, marking last year as Petite Sirahs Golden Anniversary. Concannon is the best location for the Petite Sirah Symposium, states Jo Diaz, founding executive director of PS I Love You, Inc. Petite Sirah is Concannons flagship wine; couple that with the fact that Concannons commitment to sponsoring the Petite Sirah Symposium has kept it in the forefront of interest by U.S. wine reviewers for all of these years.

A cozy place to stay in Monterey is the Lone Oak Lodge, on North Fremont Street, just off Highway 1, past the Monterey Fairgrounds. This is your basic old-fashioned style motel that makes car camping easy. You pull up to your room, unload, boom, youre done. All onestory units, with pleasant bathrooms, clean, comfortable and equipped with wireless everywhere. Fresh flowers in each room are a nice touch, and each unit has a fridge and a coffee maker thank goodness! Creature comforts are important, and this quiet, easy-to-find and easy-to-love, family-friendly lodge has decent towels, great water pressure and plenty of space to stash all your stuff. The fireplaces in some rooms are quite cozy. Everything is clean and in working order. The best part about Lone Oak is location, location, location: youre only minutes away from all the sights and sounds of nearby Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach, but you dont hear any of it from the rooms, thanks to layout and setback off the highway. There are several restaurants in proximity, including a serviceable Chinese for takeout, and drug store, bottle shop and breakfast spot within walking distance if youve had enough time behind the wheel. You seriously cant beat Lone Oak for value, convenience, comfort and quiet. A good
nights sleep is what you need most after an exhausting day touring 17 Mile Drive, playing a round on a championship golf course, gazing at the wonders of the deep at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, playing tourist on Cannery Row and Fishermans Wharf and winetasting and people watching on the storied streets of Carmel. Featuring family suites, single rooms and king suites with in-room spas and fireplaces, an on-site indoor Jacuzzi, dry sauna, exercise equipment, Scuba Diver rise area, plus an outdoor barbecue area make the Lone Oak Lodge an ideal home base when youre in the Monterey area.
