Vernacular
Heritage

T
he scenic landscape of Lunigiana
unfolds with the unique charm of
its vernacular farmhouses, typically
referred to as "Poderi". These pic-
turesque structures served for ages as the
heart of small family-operated farms, often
surrounded by vineyards and fertile agri-
cultural expanses. Embraced as integral
components of Tuscany's invaluable agri-
cultural legacy, these buildings stand as
timeless symbols, mirroring the region's
lasting narrative of centuries-old traditions
in farming and winemaking.

The “Podere” represented a fundamental

structural element of rural society from
the Middle Ages until the 1960s, when
demographic dynamics radically changed
due to an intensification of migration
from the countryside to urbanised areas.
However, in several places throughout the
Tuscan territory, this type of construction
still maintains its most intrinsic characteris-
tics and constitutes, above all, a landscape
and cultural element of great value.

The unique construction techniques and

use of local materials of this type of ver-
nacular architectures not only contribute
to characterising these Italian villages
(Borghi) but also define the rural landscape
of the majestic hills where these Poderi
are located. Silent witnesses of the inexo-
rable passage of time and testimonies of
the resilience and adaptability of the local
community, unfortunately some of these
structures are currently suffering the
effects of decay...

n the heart of a global shift, where
urban hustle and bustle give way to
a slower and more intimate pace,
there is an enchanting renaissance
taking place in small towns and rural lands-
capes. The younger generations, always
seeking authenticity and connection, have
rediscovered the charm of these pictu-
resque places, transforming them into
coveted cultural havens and idyllic vacation
retreats.

As the winds of change sweep through

these once-overlooked areas, a fascinating
trend is emerging: farmhouses and wineries,
anchored in the rich tapestry of rural life,
are embracing this revival with open arms.

These charming establishments are not just

places to sip fine wine or savour farm-fresh
produce; they are evolving into immersive
hubs of experience, weaving together a
tapestry of culture, music, tasting and
hands-on agricultural adventures.

"Cultural Winery" is about imagining a new

concept of tasting, a space in which art,
culture and tradition come together in a
single project. The goal of this competi-
tion is to complement the existing facilities
with a new building capable of offering
a contemporary experience in a space
steeped in history. A one-of-a-kind winery
where leisure, events and nature coexist in
harmony.
