Chemistry in the Community (CHEMCOM) Mrs. Lisa Tighe Welcome to ChemCom! You are now about to take a fantastic and wonderful journey into the world of science. The guiding principles behind our journey relate to the National Science Standards and the Illinois Science Standards.. It is these standards that will serve as the guidelines and expectations of what you are to learn as a student of Chemistry. Course Description: Topics to be covered include: Atomic Theory & Structure, Chemical Equations and Reactions, Gas Laws, Liquids & Solids, Radioactivity, The Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Energy Changes, Nuclear Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids & Bases, and Electrochemistry. Course Expectations: Students in this Science course are expected to develop problem solving skills, scientific literacy, digital literacy, scientific writing and reading skills. Students are expected to come to class prepared and to complete assignments on time. Textbooks and Materials: Textbooks will not be assigned to students. A science binder is required to keep assignments, writing assignments, lab reports, class notes, etc. A notebook specifically for science is required for class notes and class work.
Grading Plan: Grades are based on the point system. Each assignment is assigned a point value based on the difficulty and importance. Quizzes and larger assignments can range from 10 to 50 points. Tests are 50 to 100 points while larger projects and papers may weigh even heavier. A students final average is computed by taking the total number of points received divided by the total number of possible points creating a percentage. For Example: Unit TestSection QuizBell WorkYou earned: You received 88 out of 100 possible points You received 40 out of 50 possible points You received 27 out of 30 possible points 155 out of 180 possible points. 155/180 = .861 or 86% 1
Extra Credit will be given for the following items (limit 1 of each per student):
