A. Varieties of Plot Patterns 1. Flashback the method of inserting an episode that occurred previous to the main flow (base time) of the plot. 2. Multiple Flashback suggestive clues leading to symbolic or a literal trial or challenge. 3. Flash-forward also known as prolepsis, gives the reader a sudden, clear-eyed glimpse into the future 4. Frame Story tale told by a character appearing in a larger work; also known as mouthpiece approach 5. Figure-Eight loops time around a central moment or keeps returning to the same image or central event. 6. Reverse order sequences that marches the character from the past to the present. 7. Out of sequence contains scrambled information that are slowly being introduced to the readers. 8. Chronological narrative device used in storytelling based on time sequence of events. B. Characterization an illusion based on three elements: 1. Consistency refers to patterns of behavior, outlook, physical appearance, etc.; the fundamental assumption upon which fictional characterization is built. 2. Complexity the process of adding another aspect to the characters original pattern. 3. Individuality the imperfection or nuances that make the character unique. G. Narrative Tension Tension the recurring force that maintains the sense of forward motion throughout a story or novel. Techniques in Creating Tension: 1. Dramatic conflict 2. Arousing Curiosity 3. Irony and Satire
