Behavior Management Activity Three: Reinforcement and Punishment

1. What is an example of a behavior you would want to increase in the classroom?

How would you increase this behavior? Did you use positive or negative reinforcement to increase the desired behavior? How would you decide? 2. What is an example of punishment that you would use if needed in the classroom, the playground, or other school setting to decrease an inappropriate behavior? What is the function of the childs behavior? What is an example of a replacement behavior that you could teach to this child to help decrease the inappropriate behavior and meet the childs need? 3. Think of a punishment you have received or have seen given to another individual. Describe the ABCs of this occurrence. Was the punishment effective in changing the behavior? Why do you think that punishment is usually not as effective as reinforcement when working with students in the classroom? What are some of the ethical decisions to consider when using punishment?
