Editorial Exhaust
It's been a pretty fun season thus far. For those of you who may not know, this year, I'm involved as a scrutineer for the Canada GT Challenge Cup. Its a neat way to stay involved in racing while I'm not driving and learn about another aspect of the sport. Working as a scrutineer, I get to take a pretty close look at the cars, and since it is essentially a "run what you brung as long as it's safe" series, the variety of cars and the work that's been done to them is amazing. What have I seen? More Porsches than you can shake a stick at, Trans Am cars, stock cars, a Chevy-Nissan hybrid, and recently, an Ultima GT. Apparently it has something like 600 bhp from a Chevy V8 and weighs around 1500 lbs. It looks sort of like a Lotus Elise with a bit of Porsche 962 to make things interesting . Unfortunately, with the activities on the Sunday race day rained out two weeks ago (it happened too with our Solo II event), we couldn't see what the car was really capable of. Rumour has it Lew MacKenzie has one on order as well. Will Klaus Bytzek and his 911 GT1 have someone else giving him a good run since Jim Holtom and his Camaro? Stay tuned and come to the Canaska Cup weekend to find out. The search for Link editors is still on! Thus far, one person has expressed interest in working on the Link. However, this person will need help. So if you're interested in being part of the editorial staff, please contact me. That's it for this month. See you at the Canaska Cup event! Hopefully some of you will have some stories and pictures to share in print for next month. Chris Krepski Editor

The VP Report
by Ron Woltman It was the autumn of 1968. That was the first time I saw Le Circuit Mt. Tremblant. The occasion the second running of the Canadian Grand Prix. The inaugural event having been held the in Centennial Year at Mosport. I was awestruck. My buddy and I had hitchhiked up to this mystical track nestled in the Laurentians. No hopping on the Metro to get to the track. Or watching on TV. In fact, I stole into the circuit under cover of darkness in the trunk of large Pontiac sedan! But somehow, some 60,000 plus people were jammed into the place. I remember it as if were yesterday. Fast-forward the tape to June 2000 and a quick bicycle tour of this once great Grand Prix track. At first glance, especially in front of the now derelict and abandoned tower the pits long since removed a feeling of sadness permeates the soul. Not to mention -- surprise. What seemingly little work had been done to up-grade the facility to a more modern and safer racetrack. The only sound is the wind blowing though the uncut grass and many birch trees. The only telltale sign of work is that all of the guardrails have been removed. What a contrast the to the sights and, especially the sounds of 1968. I recall the wail of the Matra V12 as it howled through the trees along the back straight, as Steve and I trudged around the entire circuit, hearing the cars, but only very rarely catching a glimpse of these magnificent Formula One machines. Machines I had only read about through the magic of Henry Manney III in the pages of Road & Track. Now as I sailed through corner one to the top, scanning the pavement for that always elusive apex and down the hill on the other side, the asphalt covered in slippery sand, I could not help but wonder how a grid of three-abreast Grand Prix machines had once roared their way down towards turn two and the esses. Awesome. Now, all the trees and embankment are gone and one can actually see from the bottom of two to the back straight. Yes, most of the forest is missing from at drivers right at corner seven past the cut-off for the short track. Clearing it seems, with the view to provide for safer runoff zones. Furthermore, a number of places on the track have been dug up to remove old and rusty culverts, and re-filled with sand and land fill, made up of mostly crushed beer bottles. But that for the most part marks the only work on the track per se. As one pedals through eight towards the carousel, now with improved line of sight, ones mind casts back to your first quick lap round the place, wondering what might be lurking ahead on the track behind the trees as the car yumped at the bump at eight! Around the carousel and up the back straight not a sound except the heavy heaving of my lungs breathing hard as I pedal up the long straight. And again, surprise and amazement as you cast your eyes to drivers right and look all the way back to the bottom of two! Huffing and puffing up the hill towards the oft-named bridge, now blacked out, and stopping for a quick look at the faded and near crumbling tower standing above it all in the distance. A quick run up to Namerow, then down the hill towards the faded start finish line, casting a glance at your first campsite by the birches on drivers left. Twenty-five minutes! Not as quick as Denny Hulme for sure winner of that 1968 race in a McLaren but a whole lot more nostalgic.

Solo II Season Well Underway

by Jaak Laan

back up course and brought copies of that as well. First decision as a motorsport Event Organizer in my life, and it was a safety one...ditch the long course, run with the alternate course. Whew! Because of the volume of entrants we were half an hour late getting started, then we had some computer problems which managed to be fixed although we had to revert to a stopwatch for a while. In the end we put 51 cars through 5 runs which is a credit to the workers at the event and also people being keen to line up and get their run in when it was time to get their run in.

12 cars from the Miata Club came out and six of them competed in the autocross. We had some 36 cars in total. Brad Merkel was Chief, Miata Liaison for that event and he had designed a course naturally geared for Miatas. There were two very tight corners perfect for flinging those Miatas around (and any spare Elans) and this was also done intentionally as we wanted safety to be numero uno issue with some newcomers. A large crew of MCO people ran the event and it is great to see people pleasantly kicking in help in the things they are capable of doing. Our club members can run great events. The weather actually went against the forecast and moved from rain, to mist to just cloudy and the track dried throughout the day as a result and times improved. Our original plan was to have three runs in the morning and then have a late lunch and a short lunch break, change the course and have another three in the afternoon. What with our usual high tech timing hiccups and our 10 AM start time we ended up with only two runs before lunch. Needing three runs on each course we decided to just keep the same course and aim for 5 runs for the day and then fun runs which worked out. Having had three events now it seems at least to me that our idea (applauded at the time) of giving people a bit of a break and starting later than last year (as we did not have to be off the lot by 3 PM anymore) might need adjusting. Im already getting up at 5 AM so I hesitate to suggest moving the start time up by an hour, but starting at 9 AM might be the only way to get 3 runs in in the morning and be able to switch to another course design for the afternoon. The Miata Invitational worked despite the weather. We hooked some new people and offered them the opportunity to play with their toys. I should note that while spending most of the day working the Start Box I enforced the lucky enough to have a Miata, you run with your top down bud rule...as one Miata driver said... is there any other way?? We had a Miata Paddock area set up and for me it was nice chance to drool. Speaking of drooling, we even had a bit of a show with some demos of a SLK230 electrohydraulically retractable hardtop...reminded me of a cross between airplane flaps and that new Santana song Smooth.

Richard Muise Event One The Solo II season started off with a bang on May 28. We held our first event at Newbridge and we had 51 competitors! Scrutineering was overwhelmed with it being the first event of the year when everyone must get checked, but a number of capable people jumped in to help Kevin Gibson. As a result of some friendly communications over the last few months with the Montreal Solo II club, 12 of their members showed up in convoy. These people are from the Club Autosport des Laurentides (C.A.D.L.) who have invited us to their September 3 event in Blainville, just north of Montreal at the former Transport Canada test facility. Well get their member's rate for the entry fee and a chance to challenge a whole new slate of drivers. One of the most interesting aspects of going there will be to drive at their rather spectacular venue within the 4 mile 36 degree banked test oval. With all of these competitors and some advance media notice we even had a crowd of people come to check out what this racing around parking lot stuff is all about. A number of people who took our Performance Ground School have since joined the club and started participating in Solo II. As Event Organizer, everything was going to my plan until I arrived at the facility to start setting up. Thats either sad or funny. I had spent some significant time designing the third Solo II course of my life, the first being for Test and Tune that we never used and the other being for the School. Upon arrival we found that one part of the parking lot was not useable for safety reasons because of detritus left behind by some corporate festivities. For some reason unknown to me, I had drawn up a

The cars that were present included the event winning highly modified BMW 3 series from Montreal, a Porsche 928, a 68 Mustang, a turbo Volvo, stock Jettas and Civics and everything in between. The podium ended up being two-thirds MCO but the top spot went to the wickedly well driven aforementioned Bimmer. Event Two The second Solo II event was the following weekend and was run by Gordon Acorn. Thirty-six entrants were there which was rather good considering the expected uneven weather. We started off cold, then it rained and thundered and lightninged and then it got colder. Some people were out in shorts and tshirts expecting a high of 18 degrees but it only got up to 9 degrees. Miatas, Mustangs, Preludes, RX-7s and an Elan were some of the cars that were there. As I keep telling people, part of the fun of Solo II is watching the performance of a whole variety of cars up close and seeing the differences in their abilities on different parts of the course. Then switching courses during lunch added to the variety. One of the course designs had an interesting infinity symbol shape in the middle and many of us wondered what would happen if you went fast enough...would you vaporize? Would you be in Solo II never never land forever? Event Three Our first Miata Invitational event with the Underground Miata Network and any other Miatas that wanted to come out and play started off cold, windy and rainy. The forecast for the rest of the day was worse. Despite this,

MCO Highland Rally

by Jaak Laan Jim Morrow has been working hard on MCO's Rally Seminar and 1st MCO Highland Rally which will happen Sunday, October 22. He's lined up a start and finish point and a room in which to hold the morning rally seminar as well as the venue for telling the tall stories after. He's designed the route and the seminar outline as well. The seminar and the rally will be free for MCO members. While we will publicize the opportunity to non-members (and charge them entry fees) we will reserve first spaces for MCO members. As entry will be limited we will encourage people to register asap. On the Victoria Day long weekend Jim drove Black Knight Racing's Impreza 2.5RS and I navigated as we did our first run through of the planned route. While this may be a road/TSD rally I can promise you that the driving will require attention and it will be fun as the roads include every variety from highways to very narrow cottage roads. ANY car/truck/van can get around the route but the more fun to drive your vehicle the better. The navigation is not hard and the emphasis is on driving enjoyment. This is a DRIVEX style road rally focussing on driving, not a NAVEX style which would focus on navigation. It is the closest you can get to the rallying feeling that you dream about without the expense, danger and commitment of performance rallying. It is pretty neat whipping around corners with your navigator warning you of events ahead...just like those in-car camera shots you see on TSN and

Speedvision. There will be Fall colours all about and tall stories at the restaurant at the end. End your summer racing season with an introduction to a different form of motorsports. After attending the seminar and participating in this event you will be ready to do the Yokohama Winter Rally series events. We did our first events the hard way...you have the opportunity to do it the right way by first doing the MCO Rally Seminar and MCO Highland Rally.

morning, he may have well lapped the field twice. Oh well - the race was not to be. The standing water posed to great a risk, especially to the open wheel cars. The event was halted to allow trace facility workers to attempt to pump out the newly formed lakes. But to no avail, whatever they could pump out just kept filling back in. By late morning the track had pretty much dried except for corners 1, 2 and 14, which still had significant amounts of standing water, or rivers crossing them. At 1 p.m., the stewards shut the event down, and we all packed up and went home... bummer. Continuing of the theme of rain cancelled events, the 4th Solo II event this year was also shut down due to the liquid sunshine problem. Kudos to Mark Wilson and his hardy band of organizers for attempting to hold the event, and making it out to the Alcatel Parking lot in the rain. From what I understand, large amounts of standing water were the norm, considering that Ottawa broke a 12 hour rainfall record at morning. An event will be rescheduled in the very near future, stay tuned to the website and the Link for details. On an organizational topic, the Club is still looking for an Editor(s) for our newsletter. Chris Krepski has done a terrific job over the past couple years and I thank him for the efforts that he has put in. Chris has done a great job, and has a couple of trophies from CASC-OR to prove it - Thanks Chris! I know that there are some seemingly pretty big boots to fill, but if you are interested, please contact Chris to help transition in a new team for The Link. That's it from me for now. So in the mean time, may your shiny side stay up and your bumper be free of small mammals. ;) Rob Microys

President's Report
By the time you read this, we're getting really close to (or have already enjoyed) the Canaska Cup TLMC/MCO Shannonville Race Weekend. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have put in the work before the event and those who committed to work at the race and make this event happen. I'm hoping that you all have a great weekend. See you all there! I never would have believed that Ontario had a Monsoon Season until this year. This has been one of the rainiest Junes on record, in case you really didn't notice, or have been living on the moon. Almost all of the slalom events so far this year have involved getting wet by the rain, and for the first time in many race team's known history, the road racing at Shannonville got shut down because of the rain and standing water on the track. It's a shame. The first session on the rain soaked track was the closed wheel GT class warm-up. Bob Armstrong in his Nissan NX2000 was pretty much in a class of his own as he started lapping cars during the 10 minute warm-up, we figure if the Ontario Challenge Cup race were held in the rain that

The New Mosport Unveiled Internationally

by Sherissa Microys

ChampCar Lites, Canadian Formula Ford, and Canada GT Challenge Cup. All were exciting to watch. I spent most of the time at corner four where you can see all the way around five now with the trees removed. There was a lot of passing and rubbing that occurred in that corner. The wider track allows for a lot more action but just tight enough too make it very difficult and sometimes unsuccessful. I highly recommend this as a great spot to spectate at for future races.

Karting: The issue of on-site ambulances and finding dates that don't conflict with other events are posing difficulties in organizing karting events. For the same reason, the budget hasnt yet been finalised. If all goes well, expect to see one or two races near the end of the season. Sponsorship: The letter proposing a marketing agreement between the club and a potential sponsor (or memorandum of understanding (MOU)) is done. Basil Chiu will merge a list of interested businesses (supplied by Rob Microys) with the form letter. Ron Woltman will then visit each business in person to meet the faces, pitch the sales, and start negotiation. Mont-Tremblant: Ron Woltman visited the track rcently. He reports very little construction work has been done. The most theyve done, he says, is rip out the existing guard rails, clear-cut the trees from the infield, and turn soil in a few odd places. In his opinion (and he admits its uninformed), the track wont be ready for its September 30 date. Rallying: Jaak Laan has organised the Highland Rally for Saturday, October 21, 2000. He needs four check-point workersthats it! Each worker will work a point for about an hourTheres a FREE one-hour navigation seminar, for neophytes, just before the event, which starts at noon. Solo II: MCO needs one to three people to organise the June 25 event, and one in July. Jaak says one person can do it, but three people each doing a third of the job is much more enjoyablefor volunteersGord will be responsible for timing and scoring. But if you want to race, then youll need: one to three bodies to organise, three to transport equipment, and one registrar Event Start Time: Discussion about starting events at 9 am instead of 10 am. Starting at 9:00 allows competitors to get more runs in during the morning, but is harder on volunteers. Contact Jaak. The Club Autosport des Laurentides (CADL) has invited MCO to the Blainville test track on September 10. Contact Jaak about driving down in a convoy. He also reminds you that each region has its own set of rules. Budget: Our cash flow is currently about -$600, but we have a $1500 bill to pay soon

Spectators packed their RVs, tents and chairs, sometimes ten deep, around the upgraded Mosport track on the weekend of May 19-21. It was a great event with eleven races, featuring the BFGoodrich Trans-Am Series, of which one competitor was a MCO member. It was Mosport's third event of the year. Competitors at the two previous CASC-OR regional events had the honour of being the first to drive on the revised track layout. Modifications made over the past winter include new pits, timing building on the opposite side of the track, many widened corners, most notably 4 and 5, and numerous upgrades to public facilities. I think their washrooms may be nicer than mine at home. Rob and I counted as many as 20 MCO members at the May event, about half as spectators taking in the great racing, some working (Canada GT Challenge Cup officials, pit marshalling, and medical) and some driving. Len Clue and Don Blewett finished seventh in their heavily modified Nissan 240 SS CGTCC GT2 car sporting a new flashy red paint job. Jim Holtom, who joined MCO this year, made his debut in the Trans-Am series with his SCADAPack Corvette. Unfortunately engine troubles prevented him from finishing but he definitely held his own for the first two thirds of the race. It was impressive to tell people that he is an MCO member. Ken Baird also made a debut in the ChampCar series having moved from closed wheel sprints, he also did not finish. Rounding out the Trans-Am weekend were 10 supporting races. Speedvision Cup was a little tamer than last year, but they still seem to think they are bumper cars, great for spectators but probably not so good for the team budgets. Also out were Spec Racer Ford Pro Series, U.S. F2000, ISSECO Kumho F1200 Pro Series, MBNA Cup Lites, Canadian
