R an d o m Thoughts from t h e S O
m a little short on random thoughts this month. The weather has finally changed for the better. Thats good news. The Blind Lizard Rally was bigger then ever. By my rough count there were over 250 machines present. This event brings out some of the best two-wheelers in the region. George Varner brought his knockout Ariel Square Four. Its always a treat to see that machine. There was a unbelievable Honda 305 Super Hawk parked next to my bike. All done up in red and chrome. Stunning. This months Section meeting will be held at the Minnetonka Drive-In. (Thanks go to Tom Wanner for this idea) This restaurant hosts a classic car show each Thursday evening throughout the summer. Ride your old iron and show the hot rod boys some two-wheeled classics. A group of us will be meeting at Greg Varners liquor store in Excelsior at 6:30 p.m. for the short 10 minute ride to the drive-in. Hope you can make it. Also in the planning is a short ride to the Auto Moto Plex in Chanhassen. They have an open house once a month. Well nail down the date and time at this months meeting. Sid Chantland has graciously offered to host a Saturday garage tour of his toys sometime in September and Greg Varner would like us to do another vintage bike show this fall. Our plate is filling up, which is a good thing. With luck Keith Peters Rapide will be on the road for a late summer event. Keith said he is, pumped up! I hope his kicking leg is pumped up also. Take care, ride safe, have fun. Remember, Some day you will not be able to do this. But, today is NOT that day! Rick Schunk

A low resolution picture, but the only document I have of that day in May 1982. I was riding my BSA 500 M20 in the 3 days rally called Tour de Bretagne and met Herve Hamon, one of the 4 popes of the Vincent in France with Patrick Godet, Francois Grosset and Herve Mocard. I was looking probably so miserable when I was detailing his Vincent that he ask me, Would you like to ride it until the next stop? Of course I would! It was a genuine magic and unforgettable moment although it took me 11 years to afford the purchase of my first Vincent.

Reassembling my Rapide in May 1995.

With my son and Malory on the Tour de Bretagne Rally in May 1995.

My Rapide loaded like a Donkey for the 1995 UK Rally at Wolverhampton - Stevenage.

With Malory in Connemara in 1996.

I also found a picture of me and my Rapide at the 1994 VOC French Rally, in her original condition as she came from Argentina. She was so worn out that it was not long before I had issues and Francois Grosset recommended to overhaul her completely, which I am glad to have done the following winter. One of the great think about Vincents is you can recondition basically everything or changed whatever part need to be changed and eventually the bike is running great.

Connemara in 1996.

In my garage in Britany in 1997.

Before I sold it in 2002, with it new 20 inch wheel on the front.

A picture of my Shadow. I bought it in 1995 in Wales completely restored it and then sold it in 2003.

That is one sweet ride. Neal Punchard says to Joe Grayden.

Joes Velo. Yes, it is one sweet ride and it runs like a sewing machine.

Philippe is all smiles as he arrives on his White Shadow... with electric start!

How would you like to have this in your garage? Beautiful.

Joe Grayden and Tom Wanner compare notes on British bike ownership.

Our host,Greg Varner, stops Keith Peters just as he was going after his fifth hamburger.

Im telling you British electrics arent that bad said Ron Spargo. Neal Punchard isnt buying it.

Damn, Keith Peters ate all the burgers, said Tom Wanner. All thats left now are the cookies, commented Joe Grayden.
