KLCS to Broadcast Special on Building Successful Communities
LOS ANGELES - The Great Recession has been filled with challenging stories about displaced families, but it has also created an environment for people to make a big difference in their communities. Along these lines, KLCS, the Los Angeles PBS station, will be airing the documentary SOS: Sustaining Our Society at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, followed by a one-hour live discussion of issues raised in the film. The documentary follows the inspiring journey of Dr. Imran Farooq, then a doctoral student at the University of Southern California. He developed a replicable model to stabilize neighborhoods from foreclosures, train unemployed military veterans for green jobs and attract community development. The second segment of the special will feature a discussion with Professor Leonard Mitchell, the distinguished executive director of USCs Center for Economic Development. Ken Simmons, chief operating officer for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, will speak about the Jordan Downs housing project, and all three speakers will take phone calls from viewers. This conversation will reveal insights on how education can be a catalyst to make a positive change. Viewers will have an inside perspective on the emotional experiences throughout their respective projects, and how they are persevering for success. The show will also have a special opportunity for high school students in the Los Angeles Unified School District to have their questions answered via telephone (1-800527-8839) and through social media. Students can submit questions from Twitter @DrImranFarooq, and stay connected on updates through Facebook.com/DrIFarooq and email (questions@klcs.org).
