Problem 1:

A car is stuck in the mud. In the efforts to move the car, the driver splashes mud from the
rim of a tire of radius R spinning at speed v, where v 2  gR . Assuming that air resistance is
v 2 gR 2
negligible, show that no mud can rise higher than a height R   .

Problem 2:

Two stars in a binary system have a separation of 2r and equal masses m, and move in
circular orbits about their center of mass. One star explodes by expelling a small fraction of
its mass very rapidly, and immediately after this its recoil speed is v f . What is the largest
value of v f for which the two stars will remain gravitationally bound.
