edu/fllt Mission The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (FLLT) provides a broad range of courses and programs that seek to develop students knowledge of foreign languages and cultures. Provided courses build foreign language competence and create an advanced understanding of foreign literatures and cultures from ancient to modern, both western and non western. It is important for students to have a global perspective in a constantly globalizing world. Our students are able to critically understand the world culture in its complexity and diversity. Learning Goals The FLLT Department nurtures and teaches students to: 1. Proficiently speak, write, listen and read in the chosen target language; 2. Demonstrate understanding of the target cultures practices, products and perspectives as well as experience the target culture firsthand and gain new perspective on their own culture; and 3. Appreciate world literatures through analysis and interpretation. All of the FLLT learning goals are closely aligned with the General Education goals of the university. Transnational Encounters Transnational Encounters is a series of speaking engagements from six internationally known authors over the course of four semesters. The series began in the fall of 2011 and will continue until the spring of 2013. The thematic focus of the series is transnationalism and diversity and all authors are chosen based on their contributions to this topic. The high-profile authors chosen to speak will create a forum for diverse engagement at the University of Delaware and use the medium of world literature in order to discuss and reflect upon political and social issues.
