Rewriting Frankenstein
How can your environments impact who you are and the choices you make? Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. When Frankenstein sees the monster for the first time and his reaction is to run away When the monster is in a town, where dogs and towns people are after him When Felix shoots the monster When the monster kills William

Your scene should have between 2-4 characters. 1 or 2 of these characters may be your own characters (not from the play). Your scene will have two parts: 1. What happens to the monster (the situation) 2. His choices as a result (the impact) Which scene will you rewrite? Number 1 What is the situation in the scene? What do others do to the Monster? Frankenstein gets scared of the monster because it looks scary, freaky and gross. The people doesnt accept the monster the way he is, and they attack him and say mean things to his face which makes him the way he is

How does this affect the Monster? What impact does it have on his life? What choices does he make as a result? Because the people were being mean to him and telling him that he is evil and bad, he becomes the way they want him to be- evil. The monster gets upset that frankentein ran away

How will you change the situation? How might things happen differently during the scene? Frankenstein becomes nice to the monster by getting him good clothes, food and helping him put on makeup so he becomes a normal person. He then introduced the monster to the townspeople and he becomes friends with them. Frankenstein kills the monster

How will this affect the Monster? What impact will it have on his life? What choices will he make as a result? The monster wouldnt have been evil and would not have killed Elizabeth, Clerval and Williamhe would have been friends with them and the townspeople.
Comment [JH1]: Really? Even though he is nice to him?

Rewriting
Frankenstein: young and idealistic; a dreamer, full of strange ideas, who believes that his work will improve the world. The monster: should look hideous- he is made of corpses, after all; very strong and agile, and, although when he first comes to life, cannot move easily, it makes him much more impressive in the later acts if he is graceful and powerful and does not lurch about clumsily; his voice should be impressive. Clerval : The same age as Frankenstein. Realistic and humorous, he is impressed by Frankensteins achievements and is curious about his friends ideas. Narrator: wears formal clothing (like a suit) and speaks in a clear and easily understood voice. Special Effects: Dim light, flickering. Sinister music. Frankenstein is in the room in the mansion (the room is the same). There is a bench with a sheet co vered form on it. Frankenstein brings the monster to life just as he did in the original version but when the monster wakes up, Frankenstein doesnt get scared. He is proud of his invention and he goes to talk to the monster and soon becomes friends with him. He gives the monster food, water, new clothes and he also helps him put on makeup. He introduced the monster to the townspeople and soon became well known and became friends with the townspeople. ____________________________________________________________________________________

Rewriting Frankenstein Act 1 (Frankenstein brings the monster to life)

Frankensteins room. It has high, arched windows through which can be seen mountains and forest. At the moment, moonlight is shining through. The light it dims and flickers as the clouds pass in front of the moon. Sinister music play.s Then a hand reaches down from above, as if from the roof, and pulls the window open from the outside. A second later the shape of a man- Frankenstein- is seen to climb athletically down the outside and in through the window. He brings with him a wire, which seems to be attached to something on the roof. Because of the dim light in the room it is impossible to be certain what he is doing. He leans out of the window and calls up softly. Frankenstein: Clerval! Are you staying up there all night? There is a scrambling sound offstage, as if the other person is not sure of his footing. Clerval: [off stage] I cant find the right place - ah, here it is- where the devil do I put my foot?

A leg can be seen waving uncertainly about, feeling for a foothold. Frankenstein takes it and guides it to safety. A moment later, Clerval appears in the window and jumps down to join Frankenstein. They are both in their early twenties: Frankenstein intense, poetic; Clerval stout, cheerful, matter-of-fact. Frankenstein lights a lamp. The room is an odd mixture of shabby sitting-rom and cluttered laboratory. Phials and bottles of chemicals and preserved specimens of various kinds line the shelves. A large electrical- looking machine stands in the corner. On the bench at the back lies something- obviously the monster covered by a sheet. Clerval rubs his hands with the cold and looks around curiously Clerval: So this is where you lurk, Frankenstein! Why is it so cold? Its even more frigid than it is outside! Both men have heavy coats on. Clerval is rubbing his hands together in the cold and even then, he is shivering in the frozen air. Frankenstein: I keep this place cold on purpose- it preserves my treasured specimens. As Frankenstein talks, a clash of thunder fills the air.

Clerval: Oohh, Id better get going before the rain comes or Ill be tracking mud into the kitchen Clerval strolled towards the door and made a grab for the knob Frankenstein: Do you still want to know about what Ive been working on for the past 2 years or not? Clerval: okOk, fine! Ill stay. Only if you hurry up and tell me! Clerval backs away from the door. Frankenstein: lets get down to business Frankenstein ushers Clerval to sit down as he himself sits down too. Frankenstein: have Have you heard of a scientist called Galvani? Clerval: nah Nah all composers names sound the same to me
Comment [JH2]: Remember the stage directions need to be aligned on the right, and you need to have the tone of voice that the characters are using with each other. Frankenstein: wellWell, Galvani is a scientist who did a legendary experiment by passing an electric current through a dead frog and it came back alive for exactly 3 minutes and 34 seconds. Clerval: oh Oh now I get it! Youre going to pass an electric current through that - if my guess is rightcorpse under that sheet and it will come alive! Clerval points to the bench Frankenstein: smart Smart like you were since we were in the 6 th grade, Henry. Clerval: okOk, Im into this- Ill help you work on this experiment and well see whats come out of it. Frankenstein: Ok lets get working. Frankenstein gets up and walks over to the bench. Clerval follows him. The bench has a machine connected to it with all sorts of wires and levers. Clerval: nice Nice technology you have there, Frankenstein. What can I do to help? The lights go on and off as if there is lightning. The sound of rain and thunder fills the stage. Frankenstein: Do you hear that? The rain has come and where there is rain, there is lightning. When the next lightning strikes, turn this lever. Frankenstein indicates a lever on the machine. While Clerval nods. Clerval: okOk, but how does this pulley thing work and why does it need lightning? Cant you just use one of those newfangled devices that I think you scientists call a generator? Frankenstein: noNo, generators dont generate enough electricity for the Monster to come alive. Lightning produces far more electricity than generators do. The sound of thunder and another flash of lightning enter the stage. Frankenstein: [Shouts] Quick! Turn it now!

Clerval: turn Turn what? Frankenstein: the The lever! Clerval quickly turns the lever while Frankenstein hurries over next to the bench. The sound of electrical buzzing comes out from the machine Monster: [screams] Aargh! Frankenstein: [Shouts] its Its alive! My heavenly creature is alive! Frankenstein hugs the monster as Clerval looks on admiringly. The Monster acts confused and backs away from the hug. Frankenstein extends his hand in the act of a friendly handshake Frankenstein: oh Oh dont be scared. I am your Creator, Frankenstein but you may address me as Victor. Monster: Victor? Frankenstein: ohOh, yes my name is Victor

Frankenstein signals for Clerval to introduce himself Clerval: Hello, My name is Henry Clerval Clerval extends his hand for a handshake. The Monster takes It Monster: sirsSirs, both of you have a name and unfortunately I do not. Frankenstein: oh Oh of course well give you a name! Right Henry? Clerval: oh Oh yes. Maybe we could name him Charles? Frankenstein: Charles, what a nice name. Creation, would you like to be named Charles? Monster: oh Oh yes, sir. Thank you

All characters freeze. The Narrator enters the stage and stands in the side of the stage. Narrator: This act of name giving, the start of the friendship between the three. As time goes by, Frankenstein, Clerval and Charles became great friends. Clerval puts on makeup for Charles so he can go get plastic surgery with Frankenstein but thats another adventure for another story. For now I must bid farewell.

Comment [JH4]: Pahdee, you have an interesting ending, and have spent a lot of time writing about how the monster comes to life, but not really spent that much time talking about how the situation impacts the monster.
