Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. Anticipatory Set Bell work: What do you put on your Facebook page? If someone who had never met you before looked at your Facebook page, what would they learn about you? Objectives Students will analyze a character from Romeo and Juliet and create a Fakebook page for that character that represents the characters personality traits, motivations, and tragic flaws. I can identify a characters personality traits, motivations, and tragic flaws. Students will cite at least one direct quote from the play that provides evidence of their analysis of the character. I can cite at least one quote from the play that represents my character and I can explain why that quote represents my character. Instructional Input 1. Use sticks to call on a few students to share their answer to the bell work question. Take volunteers if any. 2. Discuss with students how social media says a lot about who we are. Sometimes we write about ourselves (direct), like in the About Me section, and sometimes there are things on our page that just give clues to who we are (indirect), like what other people write on our page. Discuss direct and indirect characterization with the students, and tell them that authors do something similar when they create characters. We learn about them through their direct characterization and indirect characterization.

3. As a class, do a quick brainstorm on the board using one character Benvolio. Ask the students what we know about him. How do we know it? Is it direct or indirect characterization? Once we have a good list, ask students to think about what his Facebook page would look like. Ask for some volunteers to answer the question. 4. Show students my model of a Fakebook page for Benvolio and discuss it. 5. Tell students that they will make a Fakebook page for a character from the play. They can choose between: Romeo, Juliet, Nurse, Friar Lawrence, Tybolt, or Mercutio. 6. Handout Fakebook directions/requirements and templates and go over with students before they begin. Checks for Understanding 1. Formative Assessment: When practicing identifying direct and indirect characterization with the students using Benvolio from the play. Do the students understand both direct and indirect characterization? Are they paying attention to the interactions between characters? The choices that the characters make? The things that other characters say about this character? Guided Practice 1. Brainstorming Benvolios Fakebook with the class showing the students my own Fakebook for Benvolio and discussing it. Make sure to point out the essential items that they should incorporate the direct quote, the explanations, the way the comments relate to the plot of the play and the characterization of each character. Closure 1. Students will have a short amount of time to start their Fakebook at the end of the hour. I will tell them that they will have 15 minutes at the beginning of the hour tomorrow to work on it, but what they do not finish will be homework and will be due the day after tomorrow.
