Lab #5 Exploration of iPad and Learning Activity Development using Tablet Technology
Target Audience This lesson is targeted to grade 7-9 students in a social studies or media class

Topic

Awareness and student involvement of current, local news

Purpose

The purpose of this learning activity is to have the students become aware of the community and its events using new technology tools like the iPad. With the use of the iPad it encourages creativity and aids the student in the presentation of their news findings. By using the iPad, it allows the students to become aware and familiar with apps that they can use in the future for projects and presentations.

Materials & Resources

iPad: camera/video feature, recording feature, and app Splice. Internet: for finding local events

Activity

Students will produce a current and local news topic using the iPad app Splice, and present their news story to the class.

Goals and Objectives

After the completion of the assignment, students will: Become more aware of the local community and its events Have the opportunity to take interest in local events Demonstrate knowledge by using the iPad and the app Splice Be able to take pictures, videos and create audio with the iPad

Lesson Plan:

Introduction

Introduce the lesson with an example of a video clip produced from the app, Splice

Pre-Assessment

Have students brainstorm current local events This may include everything to sporting events, to accidents, breaking news, or any event that has an effect on the community. Demonstrate how to use the camera, video, and recording feature on the iPad. Explain the features within the app Splice and how each feature works. Have the students pair up into groups of 2-3 people Have each group choose a news topic Allow each group to explore further into the app using all available features to their maximum potential. Have each group include one personal interview that displays the opinions of that individual on the topic you have chosen. A rubric will be provided displaying the guidelines and expectations of the assignment
