Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Sectors Formulae Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

be able to manipulate the formula for the arc length of a sector. Most students should be able to manipulate the formula for the arc length and area of sectors. Some students should be able to derive known facts for problems involving sectors through manipulating the formulae. Keywords: Formulae, Arc Length, Sector Area, Radius, Diameter Learning Activities Starter/Introduction The problem on the first slide involves calculating the area and arc length of a sector since both of these are required throughout the remainder of the lesson. Have the class attempt this problem without the use of a calculator so they simplify the fraction. This is an important skill when manipulating formulae later on. Answers could be presented on mini-whiteboards for teacher assessment and feedback. It is important that by the end of this phase each student is confident using both formulae. Development The level of this lesson requires students to be competent rearranging simple formulae. To model solving the problems on the second slide guide the students to considering the formula before the known values are substituted in. This allows the formula to be presented as simply as possible in order for it to be rearranged. After solving the first problem have the class attempt the second one in pairs or small groups on a single mini-whiteboard and assess progress. When feeding back it is important to provide clear writing frames. The Geogebra file can be used to consolidate this if more practise is needed. Students could attempt the problems on the third slide independently. Ensure each diagram is sketched and with the working out shown adjacent. Encourage peer support when manipulating the formulae. Plenary The plenary provides a fairly challenging problem involving multiple aspects of geometry. Whilst this requires little transposition of formulae to complete deriving known facts and using them to calculate the area is central to show progress throughout the lesson. Differentiation More able: Students could investigate the following: o Angle needed for a cone of given height and radius o Radius needed for a cone with given curved surface area and angle. Less Able Students may need to consider the arc length formula one lesson and the area the next. Resources: Calculator Geogebra File
