Standards Addressed: Standards: Life Science Topic: This topic focuses on the physical needs of living things in Ohio Specific Observable/ Measurable Learning Objectives: Students can see and understand the life cycle of a living thing (butterfly). Connections: Students will be able to make connections with the life cycle of a butterfly. They will also be able to identify the stages of a butterfly. Required Materials for this lesson: Pictures of the 4 stages of a butterfly Construction Paper The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Cade Glue 4 different stages of a butterfly

Students Background/ Prior Knowledge/ Experience: They know what a caterpillar is and a butterfly but do they know that a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Ask students what they know about butterflies. Ask questions such as Have you ever seen one? Have they ever touched one? What did it look like? Was it colorful? Ask students what they know about the butterfly was before it was a butterfly? Main Ideas: How we use our senses everyday What body parts we use to manipulate our 5 senses What do we do when we use our five senses Key Vocabulary: Butterfly

Larva Chrysalis Pupa Imago Living Patterns Motivational Strategy/ Anticipatory Set for Lesson: I will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Cade Introduction, Body Conclusion: 1 We will talk about the book and what happend 2 After talking about the book I will show them in stages the life cycle of a butterfly. 3 I will explain the life cycle of a butterfly to them having them demonstrate each stage for me. 4 I will hand out the 4 different stages of a butterfly and ask them to glue them to their construction paper 5 They can color the different stages of the butterfly Differentiated Instructional Support: Students can visually see the different stages of the life cycle of the butterfly Students can touch the different cycles that a butterfly goes through Homework or Home Connections: Students will be given a copy of a butterfly to color in Student Assessment: Students will write down the name of each stage under their picture.
