HOMEWORK 1 (Due date: 01.03.2013)

1. Consider a piston-cylinder device with two 500-kg blocks at rest on the 0.05 m2 frictionless piston. It initially contains 50 moles of ideal gas with a temperature of 227 oC. The ambient pressure is 1 bar. The gas is isothermally compressed in a process in which another 500-kg block is added. Calculate the work done during this process.

2. 1 kmole of nitrogen gas is at an initial state of 300 K, 2 bar. It is compressed slowly in an isothermal process to a final pressure of 8 bar. Determine the work done during this process. Explain how would the answer change if the compression was carried out suddenly instead of slowly?

3. A piston cylinder contains 2 mole of a gas with a specific volume of 20 dm3/mole at 3 bar. The gas is expanded isothermally to a final pressure of 1 bar. After expansion it is heated at constant volume until temperature reaches to 1500 K. Then the piston is compressed back to its original state isothermally. a) Determine the work terms in each step. b) Determine the net work. c) Draw the P-V diagram of the overall process.
