Types of Motivation

Extrinsic Motivation

Motivation that exists outside the individual. The individual's motivational stimuli are coming from things or factors outside the individual. The desire or push to perform a certain behavior based on the potential external rewards or punishments that may be received as a result.

Categories:

Extrinsic moving toward motivation

Motivation from desiring to move toward, obtain or achieve something. Money, good grades, promotion, awards, etc. Focus of motivation is to gain pleasure.
The reason to be motivated is not because of the possibility of getting something, but rather due to the prospect of avoiding something. Laws, rules and regulations, policies, etc. It serves as a control. Focus of motivation is to avoid pain and fear.

Extrinsic moving away motivation

Intrinsic Motivation

The individual's motivational stimuli are coming from within. It exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for reward. It comes from the personal enjoyment and educational or learning experience that we derive from doing a particular activity.

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic

Intrinsic motivation compared to extrinsic motivation, is more powerful, it's influence lasts longer and the individual that is intrinsically motivated will feel more satisfied in the desired results. Extrinsic motivation is easier to engineer than intrinsic motivation, which is more difficult to obtain.
