EXPERIMENT TITLE :NORTONS THEOREM EXPERIMENT NO. : 2 REV. NO. DEPTT. : EE ISSUE NO. : REV. DATE : ISSUE DATE : PAGE SEMESTER :III

LABORATORY :NETWORKS LAB

AIM: To verify Nortons theorem in ac circuit.

APPARATUS REQUIRED: Single phase 230 V ac supply, four Rheostats (270 Ohms/1.5A), 1 MI Voltmeter (0-75/150V), Ammeter (0-1/2A).and connecting Wires.

THEORY: This theorem is in fact an alternative to the Thevenins theorem. In this theorem any two terminal ab of a network composed of linear passive and active elements may be replaced by simple equivalent circuit consisting of an equivalent circuit current ISC (IN) in parallel with an equivalent resistance RN. The current ISC is equal to the short circuit current through terminals ab caused by the active network. The parallel resistance RN is equivalent resistance looking back in to the network at terminals ab with all the sources with in the network made inactive.

PROCEDURE: 1. Connect the circuit as shown in figure (a).

2. 3. 4.

Switch on the power supply note down the readings of ammeter and voltmeter this gives the load current IL. Short circuit the rheostat and note down the reading of ammeter this gives short circuit current ISC (=IN). Next connect the circuit as shown in figure (b) and note down the reading of voltmeter and ammeter as V 2 and I 2 , this will help us to calculate the RN.
